Is this factory paint?
« on: December 05, 2005, 04:27:22 PM »
This is the tank that came with my '78 550K. Is this a factory paint scheme? While we are at it, it leaks. Has anyone had experience with the sealer sold by Caswell Plating. I have had good experience with their other products.

DusterDude will know what that is in the background.

Faust- that is non-stock paint(not even close)(not that there's anything wrong with that)

Didn't think it was. On the other hand, I sort of like it except that the Honda flash looks out of place.

I am digging that paintjob, very retro in a modern type of way (if that makes sense ;D)
If you plan on keeping that paint scheme , I would loose the Honda badges , they look outta place
on that tank , in my opinion....

That paint layout somewhat looks like the layout on my CR350 alloy tank. Old Bob Hansen race look.

That paint scheme is almost identical to old Triumphs, like the TR 7.

Dusterdude: B body as in Chevy Impala/Caprice?  ;D  or do you mean like those junky Superbirds?  Messin with ya.

Good guess Dusterdude. But I think I was messin with you by accident. It is an "A" body unit. The lever (all you can see) is the same for "A" and "B" bodies from the late 60's. You have to be able to see the floor brackets in order to tell it is "A" body. Just happened to have it on the bench when I threw the tank up, thought I would leave it there. It has been sitting in my barn with a Charger console fror years. I thought it was "B" body too.

Since I went off topic on the last post, I'm back. I think I will keep the paint. But, it is from a $75.00 bike and needs help. It leaks. Any suggestions on how to cut a stencil so that I can repaint it? I'm also going to lose the Honda flashes as suggested. The side panels seem to be replacements and are just black.

For you guys with more expierience, paint the black first and add the silver, or paint the silver and add the black? May not show in the picture but it is "cut out" with gold tape.

Somebody mentioned that it looks like old Triumph. I knew I had seen it someplace before.

If you want the silver subdued, paint it over the black.  If you want it to be brighter make sure it has a light underbase.

You don't say if you are using flats with a clear coat over, or gloss paints.  You can get a "candy" black by painting the silver first and then mixiing a little black with clear and painting over the silver with several coats.  It gets darker with sucessive coats.  Stop putting on coats when it gets as dark as you'd like.  Check it out in direct sunlight before you stop adding coats.   Just put very little black in the clear.  The formulation depends on the paint you select and the amount of solids in it.  I did this on an old 62 BSA years back when I could still get acrylic laquer.  People really liked it and the candy sure popped when it was out in the sun.
