Rear fender mod

I ran into a mod of a CB550 where the guy removed the rear fender and made a new lighting bracket. Is this safe? Seems like you'd close some rigidness.

Has anyone cut their stock fender shorter?

Is this safe? Seems like you'd lose some rigidness.

Lose some rigidity?  Why would a fender's presence affect frame rigidity?
Many have bobbed or removed their rear fenders without any effect other than better looks and maybe a wet stripe up their back when it rains.

The only things my rear fender ever supported was the taillight, the license plate and my luggage rack when the welds broke. The rear fender does not affect how rigid the frame is. There's a plate/cross brace that the fender bolts to that provides some rigidity but most of it is in the frame tubing itself.

Wish Honda just made replacement 500/550/750 rear fenders with no mounting holes and you could just drill yourself and put a backing piece behind the fixings. The only new one they make for the CB750 is for a USA 69-71 model but undrilled it could fit all CB750's around the world and 500/ 550's

I trimmed my back fender about 5" by cutting from the front where it mounts to the frame and redrilling the holes and mounting it. That way the rolled edges are left intact.
