i put a few ads up, trying to sell some tools and a few other things. in the 12 hours or so that the ads have been up i've gotten over 30 emails in response, 1 being actual interest in the torch kit i'm selling. the rest were "i will send a cashiers check for double the purchase price and you can keep half of the extra money, send the other half and the item to my borther in-law in nigeria" and other #$%* along those lines. if i wasnt in such need for money right now i wouldnt bother with it. i would also LOVE to send nasty, foul and rude emails back but then they;s have my actual email address and i'd never hear the end of it. what a bunch of assclowns

You can put an add on CL and not include your email address (put your phone # in the add).
I got tired of all the emails asking "do you still have the item listed on CL ?" only to never get any response back from them . I guess they may have been taking some kind of weird poll, but it got annoying, so now I check the box "hide my email" and put my phone # in the add. The people who actually call on the phone have more of a genuine interest in the item. I'll still get the occasional call with "Hi, I'm Joe Schmoe with the Joe Schmoe Business and we're in the business of matching people who want what you are offering on CL with people who are looking for your item"

Fine, Joe, Buy my item and sell it to your people who are looking for it.

i tried leaving my phone number but even with telling these people not to call before 9 am or after 9pm i'd still get calls a 5:30 in the morning and one person with big enough balls to get upset when i told her off for calling me at 2am about a bridle i was selling. i am not at all pleasant when the phone rings at that time of the night and unless someone i care about has been hurt or killed there is no #$%*ing reason to call me at 2 am

Don't hate Craigslist. It's a free service and they never claimed to protect you from scammers.

Now Ebay, on the other hand, not only charges for their "services" but also claims to offer protection, even though they actually don't. At least not to the level that they claim to. Reserve your hate for them.

One thing about craigslist that would infuriate me was every now and then I would get a automated call about my "vehicle for sale and that they were a better way to sell then craigslist and would only cost 20 dollars a month blah blah blah" I think they were bots that read and get all the numerical phone numbers off the for sale ads then sends them out the call. I changed my telephone# on the ad from numbers to "1 2 3 four 5 6 seven 8" Never got another one of those auto calls again.

Craigslist is like the booty call of classified ads. Most times it's worth the hassle.

no question about that. i got my banjo for free from a lady that advertised in on craigslist. i got my danelectro hodad guitar from a guy i was buying honda parts from that i found on craigslist. got my fender amplifier for 25dollars (thats just a dollar per watt) from a craigslist ad too. i got my epiphone 12 string acoustic from a guy that i traded a bunch of old, worn out ford parts i advertised on CL. i'm just getting frustrated with it right now is all.

CL is great, but it has massive drawbacks. Spam is a tough biscuit. Fortunately, I have found 3 great deals on bikes through them. Including Shrapnel, my current $300 project. I'd say it's a mixed bag, I understand your frustration, but we all know why it's still around.

Today I googled Craigslist search engines. I came up with searchtempest.com You can search keywords according to a miles based radius from you zipcode. It's worth a look. I found the Ampeg G-15 that I want near my old home town. It might be sold but I found it.

I used crazedlist.org and that's how I found my latest project for $300.

I hate them both as well,but what other choice is there? 2 examples
#1 we were trying to sell our travel trailer on ebay, a gentleman from Marysville Mich. hit the "buy it now" he spoke to the wife twice,then nothing. No deposit,nothing. We gave him ample time 1 week and still nothing,and we warned him we were gonna report him to ebay. He emailed the day after we EMAILED ebay and said it didnt have enough storage. He never even came out to the house to look at it. We got our sellers fee back,but no recourse for him,not even a strike on his account or a percentage taken from his feedback rating. so what is stopping any of us from doing this? What penalties is there? I capitalized email only because ebay is a brick wall that you cant penitrate. there is no human contact,no one you can personally speek to, no phone number listed.
# 2 on craigs list we have been getting floods of junk email wondering if we were the couple whom they were arguing with and was that us in the Fort Wayne news paper. I ramble to much cafine......sorry

I just listed 3 autos on e-bay. one for parts only, 93 dodge mini van. A person in LA CA won the $99.00 for a non driving Auto. You think they will be here to get it soon

I set up an extra e-mail account (like the 5 others weren't enough) just for CL adds. That way I can respond without giving someone my "real" e-mail address.

If you want to put your email address in the ad, but do not want spam, I suggest going to your favorite picture/image editor. Create a new image. The new image should have a white background and should be reasonably small like 30x200 or something like that. Should not be 800x1200. Type in your email address on the white background. Crop the image just big enough for your email address if you have the cropping capability. Save it as a jpg or gif. Upload it to your image host (photobucket, flicker or whatever). Use the code for the email address image just like you do the photos for everything else (you can insert images into craigslist using the html code provided by your photo hosting company.) After you insert the code, they can contact you directly through your email address.

NOTE: you are getting spam because little spambots troll the net looking for email addresses. When you make an image of your email address, they cannot find your email address because it is not text. When you post a craigslist ad, it finds the craigslist email address and spams it.

I believe the same thing happens with telephone numbers as well because a number of people that I know have gotten unsolicited phone calls from car warranty services after placing craigslist ads. So, I suggest you do the same thing with your telephone number.

You can do an image that gives your email and telephone number to be sure that they don't spam you. The bots recognize text, not images.

example:

text ---> me@me.com = NO NO NO !!!!! You will get spam

image ---->

Note: do not name the image "emailaddress.jpg".....

I have never used evilbay and never will. I can usually find stuff on CL that is within a 50 mile radius from me and most of the adds are fairly honest. Had one swine with a Mustang that after emailing him was told "didn't realize that I had no title when I posted". 3 emails later he was offering to hook me up with a fake title because "my brother borrowed $$$ against the title".
