the silver paint i laid onto my side covers and gas tank, which was marketed as an automotive paint, wasnt even a tiny bit fuel resistant, in fact it was totally opposite of fuel resistant ;D the bike is done, just waiting on the new battery to get here to ride but after all the work i did on the bike, the paint just looks like absolute #$%*. i cant afford to go out and but a couple of hundred dollars of paint and re-do it all over right now but then it looks pretty bad with the clear and color coats off of the gas tank in a couple of places down to the primer. i have thought about shooting tank and side covers in a bed liner type of covering but will that look as halfassed as the silver paint thats come off in parts. anyone have an opinion on this, i'm really torn over what to do about it.

Pro-Teal did one of his bikes in a bed liner and it looked really good.

For a fuel-resistant paint you really have to use a two part urethane.

Thats why I spent the several hundred bucks to get set up with urethane, but then again I'm also financially irresponsable and stupid so I don't necissarily recommend it  ;D Eastwood I believe makes a 2 part urethane rattle can paint for about $25. You won't get the same coverage as an HVLP (or so I'm told) but if you put 2 or 3 coats on and wet sand it, you should be golden.

How about using Spraymax 2 part clear as a topcoat?

I have to tell you from experience, if you do a rattle can job with no solid clear coat on the top you're asking for anger issues. Gas spilled on my tank and I nearly pulled it off and threw it across the gas station. A whole weekend destroyed by a leaky fuel dispenser.

I feel your pain. I used duplicolor flat black on mine. I fueled up for a night out and when I left the gas station I hit a pot hole and gas was EVERYWHERE !!!  The cause you ask, a $5.00 seal inside the gas cap. Ive been riding around with streeks all summer.

Understand that this is polyurethane with an isocyanate catalyst (basically super glue)
The stuff has an amazing ability to seek out moisture/organic compounds.
Have you ever seen forensics work where they get fingerprints off of a glass by fuming it with super glue?

Be sure to protect yourself properly with a charcoal canister respirator (home depot), a tyvek one piece suit, goggles and gloves. Isocyanates are absorbed through your skin and especially the mucous membranes/eyes.
If you then wet sand your clear within 24hrs 1200 grit in one direction and then 2500 in the other (visibly removing all the 1200 grit scratches) and then a buff and machine polish and you will have a show quality paint job you can shave in!

Like this:

X= an unknown quantity
Spurt= a drip under pressure!
