Factory style or NOS nuts and bolts?
« on: September 04, 2009, 08:06:47 PM »
I stripped one of the pinch bolts on the top triple tree of my 550.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to find a nice looking replacement?  I'm not even sure where to start looking for chrome nuts and bolts...
If I forgot to state it in my post, I'm probably talking about a 1976 CB550K...

Someone on the board here probably has some...just ask.  Then you can have them rechromed.  My plater charges $4 per bolt or nut to chrome it.

I really hate to ask this but, did you try Honda?

I bought mine from Honda. Less hassle than rechroming -and less wait too-.

Your local Ace or True Value carries chrome metric hardware for less than it would cost to have the originals re-plated.

Yes they do but they're not JIS bolts. What normally would be a 12mm wrench size will be 13mm. And above that size the threads aren't the same.

All of that hardware is still available from your Honda dealer. Not that much money either, plus it is the correct length, head size and thread pitch. The dealer is ALWAYS the first place to check. If you have a #$%*ty dealer, find a good one. I use Bettencourts in West Bridgewater, MA. They have been a Honda Dealer for over 40 years.

Thanks guys.  I guess it didn't even occur to me that you could still get the hardware from Honda.  I'm heading there today so I'll look into the bolts too.  I did poke around at the Ace Hardware closest to me but they barely had any metric stuff.

If they are the same as the 400 and 750 they will be M7. You will not find many stocking that off the shelf. as mentioned before see a dealer. I do make them in stainless, but I'm on a 2 year hiatus (not prison).

Above M8 you will find 1.50 pitch thread, Honda used 1.25 so be careful out there, as has already been mentioned bolt head sizes also vary between Honda and the normal available metric bolts, M8 bolts (1.25 pitch) are 13 mm head size normally but Honda used 12 mm heads.
Don't you need an operation for a hiatus Paul ?

Hi Den, Have you started your F2 project yet ?. The wife got a transfer to India for 2 years so we are all out here, Have found a few things to keep my self busy as I brought a large box of 400/4 and GS1000 parts to be plated (£2.10 Kg  :)), also found a place to do some plastic plating for me. I should be returning with a large supply of stainless JIS screws and bolts and 303 bar and hex.

Hi Paul, yes it's F2 time, I'm just gathering and reconditioning parts at the moment, hence at the moment I'm collection all the old Honda bolts I can find and sending them off to be plated.
Sorry for the thread hijack !

+1 on Ace Hardware, or the equivalent in your area. Stainless and chrome in all sizes. I started replacing all of my bolts with chrome, then switched to stainless when the chrome bolts started to show some rust.

All of that hardware is still available from your Honda dealer.

Quite a bit of it is, but not "all" of it; shock mount and exhaust mount bolts are no longer available, for example. Nor are the triple tree clamp bolts (10x35) or any of the engine hanger bolts.

Go to Bike Bandit and do a search for what you need; they're the best gauge (I've found) of what's available. They only list stuff there that is still available from Honda, and they have most of it in their inventory. If you see it listed, you can then go to your dealer and order it for a little cheaper (though one thing to note is that most of these bolts are merely zinc plated and are not likely to last any longer than the originals).

Otherwise, try Ace, or someplace like it. Home Depot is oddly limited in its bolt selection, but you can look there, as well. As others have pointed out, approximately 99% of the bolts on a 550 have a 1.25 pitch. Keep this in mind when bolt hunting.

You could get all of your old bolts re-chromed, but at $4 a bolt, this is a more economical way to go, and those old bolts will re-rust eventually, anyway.

All nuts and bolts from Ace Hardware:

Hope this helps

I agree a lot of the special bolts are not longer available and I used to do a fair amount of parts in stainless. Not doing them anymore but this is the sort of thing.

I'm sure if turned up at a small machine shop with a length of 303 hex bar they may run a few bolts off in the correct head size and pitch.
