If the motor is in the frame the carbs come off and for room to work with I personnaly would pull the tensioner.

Doesn't NEED to be removed but given the ease go ahead and pull it to give yourself more room.  Three bolts and one gasket, five minute operation.

Yup, piece-o-cake w/ tensioner off. A lil help w/ a hammer getting it in and out moved things along. 30 minute operation.

i wouldnt even think about doing a starter without removing the tensioner. it takes 2 minutes to take it off and saves a buttload of time and trouble.
