harley vs lamborghini
« on: September 06, 2009, 08:50:42 PM »
let me start this post by saying that this isnt a post knocking harleys, i've owned harleys (ironhead sportster) that said, a neighbor of mine rides an ultra classic a few years old, he's an orthodontist. this evening while i was taking the trash out, he was out for a walk and we talked for a few minutes, about bikes of course. he's one of those harley owners that thinks anything BUT harley is a piece of crap, he said to me "harley is the lamborghini of motorcycles" at which point i started laughing so hard i about wet myself, you see lamborghini started out as a farming equipment manufacturer :D man was he pissed when i explained why i was laughing.

I heard recently that lamborghini started making cars after Enzo Ferrari and he got in an argument.  Not sure who ever won the argument but we ended up with some cool cars 8)

Hi there,

Your neighbour stole the quote from a mid '70s advertisement "Laverda is the Lamborghini of motorcycles". Ducrappi had already claimed to be the equivalent of Ferrari. I never cared for the comparisons, but a Harley is lightyears away from even touching any Italian sportscar.
They had Porsche design an engine and still didn't get it right to build an decent handling bike!
I would have laughed at the guy as well.

Last night on some show about 1%ers they said that "harley is the ferarri or motorcycles, everyone wants to be seen on one"

I laughed at that

That is to funny. I really don't understand all the hating on HD but to refer to it as being in the same level as a $200k Italian sports car is just ignorance at it's best. I grew up around HD riders so I have definitely met my fair share of people who think HD's are the be all end all to bikes. I find that I usually don't agree with them politically or religiously either, I don't why I just pointed that out, I just think it's kind of funny.

I will most likely own a HD at some point because I have ridden them 3-500 miles a day for 9-12 days straight and really enjoyed the riding position, big dumb seats, loud pipes and vibration. I will always have something vintage and most likely Japanese for my, around town bike though.
I put a lot of miles on my 400f but even if it were stock I  would never ride it as far or as long as I have ridden HD's.

When I'm out on my 400f I get several reactions from HD riders. Some of them come up and say "is that a 400f, I used to have one, those are great bikes." Some say " I really like what you have done with that bike, what is it?"
Then there are the ones who look at it like it's from another planet and say things like "bet you ain't riding that thing on long distances" to which I usually reply with "I'm not sure what you think is a long distance but I put four thousand miles on it in that last 4 months."
Those are usually the same people who have five thousand miles on a 3-year-old bike.hehe

I was in Longview, Wa over the weekend and my Dad asked me to meet him at some Kelso Iron Horse bike show. I like all bikes and thought it would be interesting to see HD riders reactions to my 400 so I road it down there.
There was a crowd around it the whole time and everybody asked me to enter it in the show under the best Metric Design category but I declined for a number of reasons.
Even though there were a lot of "Only HD's are cool people" there, there was a lot of crusty old burn outs circling it and saying things like " I wish I never sold my old Jap bike" and "I bet that thing really tears up the corners".
I also met some guys my age, mid 30's, who all had SOHC4's, it was nice to meet some more vintage Jap bike lovers in a sea of HD's.

So I'm at Auto zone yesterday picking up a fuel pump for my car, and riding my 77 550K.  While I'm there, a guy rides up on a chromed out chopper and comes in to buy oil (no suprise there).
We leave the store at about the same time, and as I'm climbing on my bike, a truck pulls up and yells "what a cool bike - what is it?"

The guy on the chopper turns around and says "Iron Horse".

The guy in the truck says "not you, I meant the cool old bike!"

Life is good.

Lamborghinis are highly sophisticated and tempermental vehicles which require a great deal of maintenance. They break down a great deal. Harleys on the other hand are very crude, need a lot of maintenance and break down a lot. There are linkages between the two if you look at it that way.

OK boys, thats enough misconception again. I'll have to change my avatar to my Fat Boy again if you keep this up.  ;) The 2003 Fat Boy has never broken down, never had a single problem, never used oil, never leaked oil, has more miles than my 750. Engine designed by Porsche thank goodness. Wish I could say any of those things about my beloved old 750 :o

Don't think I'd take my daughter to your orthodontist neighbor. Seems somewhat misinformed. Our dentist rides a nice Beemer partly provided by our 3 fairly expensive mouths.

honestly, i think a bunch of the razzing harley gets is because of the pervasive snobbery from dentists and 1%ers alike, as evident in the 'no hand raise to rice burners' crap. reminds me of the bmw yuppies of the 80's. great cars but i hated them in the day.

many ferrari purists consider lambos to be pretenders... what's that make harleys? btw: i have no beef with hd but it is fun to razz the owners for all the skulls, chaps, and leather do-rags.

and awesome story 'squid.  8)

rxman, your 750 is 30+ years old and the fatboy is 6 years old, then there's the price difference. give it a few decades.  ;)

At least the classic does not look like a car..
Everytime I get near a Goldwing with a fairing, I think Car..

in fact less than 2 weeks ago I picked up that 750 to go on a trip to Utah, and we had to deal with a few things, like MC, sprocket etc..
My buddy said if I did not feel comfy taking the 750, I could use his Wing.. but I politely declined.. I was not interested at all in taking it down to Bonneville..
Besides.. its the 40th year for the 750, we needed some representation down there..

I saw a modern Victory at a tollbooth.  I threw up in my mouth.  They make great bikes but they have a leave a bit to be desired in the looks department.
