man, you are going for it!

I'm doing a basic overhaul on my engine. but I did do my valves, so the opposite of what you did.  ;)

I'm putting in the frame kit to make it easier to soup her up later if I feel the need. mine's really fast already, though. not sure if there's any point. besides, one more ticket and I lose my license...

I'm thinking about lightening some parts as you did, though. need to finish reading hondaman's section on free/cheap upgrades.

I can't wait to see your results. keep it up!

Thanks Josh.  I'm a little antsy myself to get it done.  That's the problem... I can't be, or else I'll make a mistake and maybe ruin the engine or something.  Got to make sure all the oil passages are clear, etc.

Been meaning to post this, otherwise no real updates to the build...    :-[

In case anyone ever wondered what's the big deal about APE heavy-duty valve springs...
The one on the left (yes, left) is the APE spring, and the one on the right is the stock spring.  The APE spring allows for more travel without bottoming out, and hence allows for a higher-lift cam.

I'm trying to strip the cases to repaint... what a nightmare! I wasn't going to crack the bottom end, but I'm considering it now just because it might make cleaning and painting this thing so much easier.

talk about nightmare, I decided to polish my cases up instead of painting. the bottom one was easy, but the top one was ROUGH, had to sand it all smooth. then polish. looks really cool, now. but it was a lot of work. went through a #$%* ton of dremel sanding discs for all the little areas. but it has a lovely soft glow, now.

being a painter I try to avoid painting. :P

Subscribed. Love the Build keep it up!
Overpriced? Oh ya. Practical? Hell no. Street legal? Probably not. Time consuming? Perhaps. Worth it? Absolutely.

Update, June 2015

My God time flies.  Can't believe I started this project 5 years ago and I'm just now putting it back together.  It'll be nice to finally have it together and running - been weighing on my mind for 5 years now.  Pics coming soon.

Anyway, looking back, I think I would have done a few things differently.  I'm not really a cafe guy anymore.  I've switched to TwoTired's camp where reliability is the most important thing for me.  It was educational diving into this engine like I did, but if I had to do over, I would not have went for a race engine.  After owning a modern sportbike (CBR600RR), I've learned that speed is also not really my thing, and I prefer to just cruise at comfortable speeds and enjoy the scenery.

Currently I'm setting the ignition and once that's done and all the nuts and bolts of the bike have been checked and tightened I'll hold my breath and try starting it.

…Then begins the tuning phase…

I'd be very grateful if anyone who has a similar setup can tell me what they found best for jet sizes and Dyna2000 settings:

Wiseco 836 10.5:1 pistons
ported head (done myself - many, many hours, hemi'd the combustion chamber, same stock valves (no valve work))
Webcam 41a grind hardweld cam (0.360 lift, 280 duration)
29mm CR carbs
Dyna2000 ignition
Mac 4-1 exhaust

Excited to see this! Wish I could help you with the settings, have the same setup on your list until the carbs. Good luck, and I'll be watching, as I have my eye on those carbs.

Hey Soichiro, wasn't it you that bought those Magura clip-ons from me a while back?   They'd sure look good on there.

Hey!  Yes, I'm the one that bought those Maguras.  I'm not sure I'm going to use them though.  I want to ride it for a while the way it is and possibly in the future put some more comfortable handlebars on it, so I'm not ready to grind off the handlebar mounts just yet.

I went for a ride a couple days ago on my CBR600RR and then took out my CB350, just to keep them both fresh.  What a difference in comfort!  Sometime in the last 5 years I realized that the aggressive "cafe" riding style just isn't for me.  I much prefer to sit upright in a more comfortable posture.

I still have them though.  Time will tell.   :D

I agree with your concern about riding posture, but oddly enough I found my 550 w/ clubmans was more comfortable for me than a 600RR.  I just felt all balled up on the RR.  I can say from experience though if you like the modern sportbike looks but don't want to give up your comfortable ergos, a VFR of any year can't be beat :)

I know this is a topic for some debate, but now that my bike is together, this is on my mind.  I think the only substantial difference between what I have and the stock configuration, at least pertaining to breaking in the engine, is the Wiseco forged pistons.  Otherwise, as far as I know, bearings, camshafts, etc., are all basically the same as back in the day.

That is the garden variety break in procedure. Note that it doesn't really preclude anything except lugging it, and continuous high engine speed operation. You can (should) run briskly, full throttle for spurts, etc.

Where the controversy comes in that I've seen is with people prepping an engine for competition, there is really no time for a 1000 miles break in. Rings and hone jobs need to seat quickly.

Thanks for the info, Ron.

On a side note, does anyone know where I can get a replacement lens for the fuel-gauge gas cap?
