1977 GL1000

Today i was out country cruising on my little 350F and came across a beautiful old goldwing for sale. It is pretty much mint cosmetically, obviously well taken care off. Had hard bags and trunk, as well as a vetter fairing. His asking price was 1600 bucks. He couldn't tell me maintenance records on it, as he just bought it at auction. Even told me he paid 1100 for it.

It had a small oil leak near the shifter, but that was the only leak anywhere i saw.

I went up to the office, It was a small auto shop, and asked who i needed to talk to. I found the guy and he threw me the keys and said take it out. I was wearing my jacket and he saw my 350F.

I'm in love with the bike. I probably shouldn't have rode it, since i've had my heart set on a 750 to build up. I will be taking off the bags and fairing if i do get it. I'll save them for long trips though.

What do i need to look for? The only problem i could tell was a clutch that was pretty hard to pull, and didn't quite disengage all the way. It picked up very soon, so probably just needed a little adjustment. It fired up on about the third try although i was being a pansy with the starter button like i always am. Once it started up it ran very smoothly.

I feel so dirty.. I've been cheating on my CB's.

After i looked at the wing, I met up with a friend and we rode a few miles out of town where he pulled over. He wanted to trade bikes for the return trip! He has a 05 sportster 1200. I have a bright red jacket that says HONDA in huge letters on the front and back. I asked him if i was still allowed to wear that when i was on a harley. I got a death look from another harley passing at an intersection lol.

Torque is a wonderful thing, but that bike runs out of steam pretty quick. I am dead even in a drag race with this sportster on my 82 650.

It's only cheating if you leave a wet spot on the seat. ;D

Check under the engine (back from the oil filter) it has a "weep hole" there. If it is leaking (oil or antifreeze) the water pump will need to be rebuilt/resealed (Not expensive, but a bugger to do).If it has the stock exhaust they are prone to rotting out where the muffler meets the head pipes.

Most GL 1000's will smoke some from the left side cylinders when left on the side stand. As long as it clears up when running (and doesnt smoke alot) its usually fine. Parking it on the center stand usually keeps this from happening.
If you do get it, replace the timing belts ASAP. Having a timing belt brake will get expensive(bends the valves and causes alot of greif and $).
The 75-77 have larger carbs than the 78-79 and are fine. A popular "upgrade" is using the 1100 carbs on the 1000.
