Completely Clueless on Tire Sizing
« on: December 03, 2005, 02:09:50 PM »
Go figure, been woring on cars my whole life, but have no clue on how tires are sized...
81 CB650, my rear spoked rim has MT 2.50 17  stamped on it, and it currently has a Dunlop Tire on it, with 5.10 17 on it.
So, I ordered a D404 130/90 17, because gee, that sounded like a really good number, but the new Dunlop looks way more narrow than the old Dunlop and rim....
Did I get the right tire?  the rim looks wider than the new dunlop...

Ran into a small problem. Doing a google search, I came up with this info.:
 CB650Z                3.25-19       4.00-18

CB650SC               3.50-19       130/90-16

CB650                 3.25-19       3.75-18

CB650 SCC NIGHTHAWK   100/90-19 H   130/90-16 H   MAXXIS

None of these list a 17 inch rim. Did the PO install something non-stock? Likely is my guess. the right hand column shows standard
CB650 rear tire sizes. Don't see a 17 incher in there. 2.50X17 is what I have on my K7(750) and I'm running 130-80 X17's on it
and the tire is quite a bit wider than the rim.

uh oh...

Don't know if the previous guy swapped out a stock rim for a custom size....
It's a straight CB650, so I'd be surprised he'd swap an 18inch wheel out for a 17 inch....

none the less; looks like someone made a switch

lets say we are talking about a 190/60-17

it would be 190mm wide
it would be 60% of 190mm tall
it would fit a 17 inch wheel

hope that helps

Not sure if 17 is correct for your bike, but 130/80 is about as big as you should go on a 2.5 rim
See the attached chart.
