Here is a replacement 77-78 CB750F tank right out of the box.  Candy Presto Red.

TT,
Looks just like mine, same pinstripes and badges. I think I can assume that the whole tank was changed. Still don't know if it is Presto or Antares?

Swaped emails with dondirtbiker regarding a candy kit for my cb550. Appears my paint problem is solved, but need some sort of stencil to outline the black cove. Tank was repainted yellow (painter apparently was paid by the quart). Don't have any guide for the size and curve fot he black.

The black panel insert was a different shape between the 74 and 75 models.  Is a tracing what you are after, and which one?

I have both tanks, neither are perfect.  But, they still have the original  panel outlines.

My 75 (in picture) has a stripe. Would really appreciate an outline of the cove on the 75 tank.
Cheers,
Fonda Honda

Bob, that tank you put up is DEFINATELY Candy Gold Custom!!! The Flake Sunrise Orange is WAY more Garish and of a distinctred colour with themetal flake apearing as different colours as i remember it. In my "collection" i have 500/550 NOS Candy gold, Boss marron Metallic tanks and several side covers including one green i cant identify. If I ever get time i will try and take pics of the side covers that are all NOS. I also have  a Flake Sunrise used tank somewhere (and i think a NOS side cover)

Thanks. It's lineage was always suspect since it is not original to my bike. Is that a K2 color?

Hi Bob There were actually two golds one was Starlight Gold and the other was Candy Gold Custom but in all honesty I could never tell them apart Starlight was 69/70 Candy Gold 70 on. As us outbackers in the UK only ever had the K1 and K2 oficially (Honda kept making the K2 all the way throught till 76 for us) we never saw some of the "pretier" colours you had

What about some actual colourcodes, that you can give to the painter, so it will be the EXCACT colour you want?

I sure would like the purple colourcode for the japanese version, it's sweet :)

lassenc there are NO colour codes for Honda colours. And as most of them are three pack candies there aint even a standard colour as you can make it lighter or darker as you spray it

There will always be a code for a colour, if not in RAL format, then in another, you can count on that!

Zane covered this pretty well in post #8 of this thread.  But, if you want codes go here for codes.  Won't help much, though.  Follow the links to find out why.

Be carefull what you ask for.  You might just get it.

Be sure to report back if you find any paint shops the can recognize and cross those codes into modern numbers of paint sold by manufacturers that are still in bussines.

Note: I quoted the information in this post from Mike Nixon's excellent website, motorcycleproject.com.  If you haven't seen this website, I recommend it highly.

The original information on the Lubritech paint numbers is at  http://www.motorcycleproject.com/motorcycle/text/notes1.html

In short, Mike says:

"The paint situation with Honda motorcycles is even more complicated. To begin with, as is the case with most motorcycles, after-the-sale paint availability has been spotty at best, with such availability having taken three different forms during the company's history. The first time, during the 60s, American Honda sold a small (about 3 oz.) can of Japanese-labeled touch-up paint; the same container came in the crate with 750s. This was the only time factory paint was available to the public. The second time Honda got involved with paint was during the 70s, when American Honda formally endorsed the product of an American aftermarket lubricants company called Lubritech... The third time was in 1982, when Honda again, as in the 70s, took to selling paint themselves. This time however the paint was not its own, but the product of the Los Angeles-based paint jobber Original Brands ... Within a very short time, Original Brands was sold to or became Color Rite, who currently maintains matching paint for most motorcycles, including Hondas, made from 1982 onward."

Now if we could only get Color Rite (http://www.colorrite.com) to offer these colors again.  Anyone know if there are specific post-1982 colors that match the SOHC4 colors?  That would be a useful list to have.

Isn't there someone who sells paint on ebay and supposedly has matches for some of these colors?

This is original colour, not a repaint of Candy Ruby Red.
I bought this bike new and been very careful with the paint so it hasn't faded very much.
The silver with black stripes looks interesting. I've read that the 1968 prototype was silver with a red and white tank stripe.

Thanks! Watched it come out of the packing crate in September 1971. It was a garage princess for quite some time - one of those mythical "parked it and forgot it" bikes we're all searching for.

Okay here is the black part of the CB550 tank for 1974.  Ignore the paint color is was maroon in 1974.  But, all the red candy faded completely away leaving it brown.
