rear retainer questions

hi all

questions on rear wheel , firstly... front wheel had to drill the stakes out on retainer, is this the same on rear ? i e are these staked ( if so how big to drill and how deep to go and exactly where are they staked is it in the 4 holes where you put your tool to remove )

pic attatched if you look closely you can see punch marks in the 4 holes ?
also is this a right hand thread ie turn right to unscrew

lastly brake linings look new but on drum very light surface rust has started to appear can i remove this rust myself or would it need any professional work done to it

You can see the staking right there. Just drill slightly wider than the staking to remove it.

If you remove the gunk on the retainer you will see an arrow indicating the direction to turn to unscrew it. It is a right-hand thread, which means turn it LEFT to unscrew.

Don't worry about very light rust. It will come off with normal use.

I just did the rear bearing on my 74 550K a few weeks ago.  The arrow points in the direction of the threads.....so go opposite the arrow to loosen.  I also had to drill out the stakes.  The Clymer manual suggested a certain size bit and I just used what it said...can't remember what it was at the moment  I tried to make a spanner of my own to unscrew the retainer, but as it turned out a large screwdriver used to tap in each hole in the the loosening direction worked best.

Be sure to use some thread locking compound on the retainer when you put it back together.

Good luck!

cheers for reply  ;)

had 2 replies with conflicting answers ( if i have read this right )

can someone verify if the retainer has an arrow pointing anti clockwise which way do i turn retainer to loosen

clockwise or anti clockwise

indyfour thinks clockwise ...  The arrow points in the direction of the threads.....so go opposite the arrow to loosen

bistromouth thinks anti clockwise
If you remove the gunk on the retainer you will see an arrow indicating the direction to turn to unscrew it. It is a right-hand thread, which means turn it LEFT to unscrew.

really dont want to knacker this retainer up as they are hens teeth in uk

Mike,

If I recall correctly, mine was left-hand threaded (arrow pointing counter-clockwise)....meaning you turn Right to loosen.

Just looked in the Honda shop manual to confirm, and it says the same thing.

Probably the best way to get it off is by using the specialized tool, but I just ended up using a large flat-headed screwdriver and tapping at each hole in the direction to loosen.  You drilled out the stakes, right?

I've seen some people make their own "wrench" by taking a metal bar and welding two catch points on the flat part....so you can grab both ends and turn that sucker.

Keep at it....it'll come off!  Go drink a beer, maybe that will give you more strength!  ;D

I tried a drift and a large hammer but no go.  Ended up taking it to a shop who put a lot of heat on it and banged it off.  Make sure you drill out all of each stake.  I ruined a few threads and it was a PITA to dress them again.

well the retainer is off, just have to get the bearings out, tried heating the hub up, but no joy, bearings must have moved slightly out has inner spacer is loose,

think i have hit wrong part of bearing though as the cover of the bearing came shooting off and a part of the metal strip which i think holds the bearings has started to unravel.

bearings are in real tight, any more suggestions, or heat it up further and keep whacking , should i keep trying and do what ever it takes to get this bearing out , whether it comes out in bits or as a whole unit

Yes, get a piece of pipe and a fairly heavy hammer. Heat the hub till it is hot to the touch and drive the bearing out. i did it cold and took me 12 whacks. With heat it took three.

its getting that first bearing out thats causing me the issue

bearings have started to come loose of their cage and are now sitting in a semi circle shape in the bottom of the hoop, but even after loads of heat and good whacks are not budging

starting to get the better of me this one

Have you tried soaking the entire area with penetrating oil?  Soak, let it sit for a day, soak some more, repeat a few time.  Then heat and try removing.

Failing that, if you can find a way to freeze the parts the metal will contract making removal much easier.

well have the bearings out, heat and penetrating oil done the trick,

although is it right the rear spacer has came out out in two pieces, must stress it is not broke in two from what i can see,

can someone give me a guide on how to refit ie steps to rebuild and whether the spacer is ok to re use

thanks for a great site and i will put up some pics when i have a rolling shell

Those are supposed to be two separate pieces as shown in your bottom pic, although, the long tube is supposed to have the little "finger guides" on both ends of it.  It looks like maybe all the pounding on the bearings drove the "finger guide" onto the smaller piece instead.  You'll need to pull it off of that part.

Really, all that the "fingers" do is help you put the axle back through by holding the spacer tube in place.  If you can manage do do that, perhaps by moving the spacer tube into position with your finger from the other side while pushing the axle through, you don't need the "fingers" part.  They really don't serve a purpose functionally on the axle other than assembly.

Did any of that make sense?  ;D

think so  :D

the smaller part which side does that go , is it to rear brake side

the bearings flew out just like the front and again i did not notice which way they came out

those fingers you mention, the ones that are on the smaller part are not in very good condition, can they be re used if they are not that vital then

i am about to replace the rear bearing and from reading all the threads, i have to drill out the stakes(which are the little dimples in each of the 4 holes) with an 1/8'' drill bit.
My questions are:
1) Am i going to damage anything if i drill too far?
2) When i put everything back together, do i have to "re-stake" the retainer(as in put 4 dimples back in the 4 holes)?

Just drill a little past the bottom of the stake holes.
I used medium threadlocker on my retainers.

Ok... so when you put everything back together, I shouldnt "re-stake", I should just use some loctite?
