Custom seat question
« on: September 10, 2009, 04:46:07 AM »
I would like a solo seat on my 550, and was hoping to fashion something from the stock seat. Any ideas. Should I keep most of the stock stuff and just trim it down and reshape the foam? Also, what becomes of the seat lock and other items, can they still be utilized? Any suggestions or pics would be great. Thanks

Well it depends on what sort of look you're after mate, but sure, you can just remove your seat cover and trim the foam to a more preferable shape, (keeping in mind that the more foam you remove, the more your butt is gonna hate you on a longer ride) most of the early custom seats were based on OEM seat bases, hinges and locks, or repro copies of the original items. If you're going for a single "cafe" seat though, you might need to make your own. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

If possible I would like to keep the locking mechanism. I am also thinking more bobber style than cafe. Has anyone seen the Madkaw bobber project? I like that look. Here it is.

I used that sort of as my inspiration for my seat..check out my build thread...I have a 78 cb550k.  Doing a softail / bobber look.....I cut the stock seat, cut the foam down, recovered it, and still has original mounting hardware...more info in the there...build thread is here.
