cb550 carb / jet question
« on: September 17, 2009, 06:24:16 PM »
hello everyone, just picked up my project a few weeks ago for a couple hundred bucks and i did a custom hardtail and some other little things here and there, just rebuilt all the carbs and im now running pod filters and a basically open exhaust, i had the 2:1, 2:1, set up but i chopped about half the exhaust off along with the baffles, so now im obviously not getting enough fuel to compensate for the air, whats a good starting point as far as bigger jets ?  im not too sure but i think it has 100's now ?   its a 74 cb550  (not sure if its k or f )  soo basically im just looking for any input on what i should do ? im very new to bikes and brand new to this site so excuse me for being motorcycle retarded.

Well first off you have a k model bike.  but if you do a search is had been said a few times on what jets people have used with good results.   I would go up 2 jet sizes and go from their. or even one jet size and see how it runs. each bike will be different so you kinda just need to play with it till it runs and idles clean.  bike looks good by the way. like how  you used the stock swing arm.
Keep it shinny side up.

thanks for the reply and for verifying what bike it was, i did infact search but i couldnt really find anyone running the same, well close to the same set up as me, so the jet size is 100 stock right ? so i should be looking for some 102s ?  its all pretty confusing to me  anyone know where i could pick up jets fairly cheap ?

dyna coils is what im running along with their electronic ignition.  z1 sells it all so you could save the time and money on shipping ordering everything from them.

When talking about jet sizes, at least main jets, the sizes step up in 5s.  100, 105, 110, etc.  With pods and open exhaust you'll probably need to start with 110s or 115s and will most likely need to step up the pilot jet as well.  You should have either 38s or 40s so might want to order the next step up when you order the mains to save time and shipping.

Check out the FAQ section of the site.  There is a carb thread there that will walk you through most of what you need to know about getting the carbs sorted out.

Good luck.

The carb section actually walks you through how to assess what you need to do.  If someone has the same set-up they may still have different jetting as it can be very particular to the bike and location.  Someone on here (and I) gave you a suggested starting point.  We can't do it for you.
