Living in the "Land of the Free"

I was gonna put this in the Humor section, but then I thought, "It's not really that funny".......... Cheers, Terry. ;D

Operator: Thank you for calling Pizza Hut. May I have your national ID number?

Customer: Hi, I'd like to place an order.

Operator: I must have your NIDN first, sir.

Customer: My National ID Number, yeah, hold on, eh, it's 6102049998-45-54610.

Operator: Thank you Mr Sheehan. I see you live at 174 Meadow Drive, and the phone number is 494-2366. Your office number over at Eagel Insurance is 745-2302 and your mobile number is 031 266-2566. Email addresses are

sea2fd.sea2@hotmail and sheehan@home.net. Which number are you calling from sir?

Customer: Huh? I'm at home. Where'd you get all this information?

Operator: We're wired into the HSS, sir.

Customer: The HSS, what is that?

Operator: We're wired into the Homeland Security System, sir. This will add only 15 seconds to your ordering time.

Customer: (sighs) Oh well, I'd like to order a couple of your All-Meat Special pizzas.

Operator: I don't think that's a good idea, sir.

Customer: Why?

Operator: Sir, your medical records and commode sensors indicate that you've got very high blood pressure and extremely high cholesterol. Your National Health Care provider won't allow such an unhealthy choice.

Customer: What?!?! What do you recommend, then?

Operator: You might try our low-fat Soybean Pizza. I'm sure you'll like it.

Customer: What makes you think I'd like something like that?

Operator: Well, you checked out 'Gourmet Soybean Recipes' from your local library last week, sir. That's why I made the suggestion.

Customer: All right, all right. Give me two family-sized ones, then.

Operator: That should be plenty for you, your wife and your four kids, and your 2 dogs can finish the crusts, sir. Your total is $49.99.

Customer: I’ll get you my credit card number.

Operator: I'm sorry sir, but I'm afraid you'll have to pay in cash. Your credit card balance is over its limit.

Customer: I'll run over to the ATM and get some cash before your driver gets here.

Operator: That won't work either, sir. Your cheque account is overdrawn also.

Customer: Never mind! Just send the pizzas. I'll have the cash ready. How long will it take?

Operator: We're running a little behind, sir. It'll be about 45 minutes, sir. If you're in a hurry you could pick them up while you're out getting the cash, but then, carrying pizzas on a motorcycle can be a little awkward.

Customer: How do you know I ride a scooter?

Operator: It says here you're behind on your car payments, so your car got repossessed. But your Harley's paid for and you just filled the tank yesterday.

Customer: Well, I'll be a #%#^^&$%^$@#

Operator: I'd advise watching your language, sir. You've already got a July 4, 2003conviction for swearing at a cop and another one I see here in September for contempt at your hearing for swearing at a judge. Oh yes, I see here that you just got out from a 90 day stay in the State Correctional Facility. Is this your first pizza since your return.

Customer: (speechless)

Operator: Will there be anything else, sir?

Customer: Yes, I have a coupon for a free 2 litre of Coke.

Operator: I'm sorry sir, but our ad's exclusionary clause prevents us from offering free soda to diabetics. The New Constitution prohibits this. Thank you for calling Pizza Hut.

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Unfortunately, most of this info. is readily available. All it would take is a few tweaks of the privacy laws, some information standards (which may already exist within national or international standards organizations) and, oh yea, a little investment. The perceived ROI, or lack thereof, is probably the only thing keeping it at bay right now.  >:(
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Aren't they really pushing for this now. New DIGITAL drivers license. Some kind of high tech passport. It is proposed that you will no longer be able to travel to neighboring places like Canada without a passport.
All in the name of fighting terror.

LET ME SAY THIS ONE TIME .........

I AM MUCH MORE AFRAID OF HOMELAND SECURITY THAN I AM OF ANY #$%*IN' FOREIGN TERRORIST!!!!!!!
(sorry SteveD but that's the way I feel)

Homeland Security, reminds me of an old WWII movie with Nazi's all over the place where ever people might congregate while traveling -- "show me your papers, now!"
#$%*!! They're searching brief cases, back packs, purses and shopping bags on the NYC subway right now. How long will it take them to say "drop your pants!!"?

Hey Dennis, from what I can gather, those Canadians aren't too unhappy about that proposal, ha ha! (now if we can just keep the New Zealanders away from this hot brown land...............) Cheers, Terry.  ;D

...... You ever here the saying "The monkeys are running the zoo"?

No  .......  but I have heard of  "... the inmates running the assylum ....."

But what I find really disturbing is that younger people are not seeing a problem with the manner in which government agencies are operating. It the "right" terminology is applied to any activity it is seemingly acceptable. As long as you tell someone that it is to "protect you from terrorists" or to "fight terrorism" it seems acceptable to almost everyone without a second thought.
I could write a book starting from this point but it's late at night and it seems that most people here (with the exception of you, me and a very few others) don't seem to care.
As you can see by my previous post I find it most disturbing.

AS a youngun, I'd like to say it bugs the hell out of me that the public at large thinks the government can actually protect you from terrorism by tapping your phones, computer, medical records, etc.  Bah.

When I lived in the States in 2002 I got one week holidays and traveled to visit SF and Vegas. That meant Nashville-ForthWorth-SF, then SF-Vegas, then Vegas-FortWorth-Nashville. In every single flight I was strip searched. A young man traveling alone was a guarantee of strip search and baggage checked. The odd couple of retired people was also searched, probably just as a justification that the searches were "random".

Everywhere there were signs saying "please do not joke with the security measures" or "please cooperate". In my opinion, "cooperating" didn't mean "enjoying it" so i was really pissed off with it and didn't mind to show it, though I cooperated. In one of the occasions they told me to remove my shoes while my backpack was searched. I told them "nobody is going to search in my backpack if I'm not present". If it means delaying the flight it's not my fault". So I waited until they searched my backpack. They started to empty it into a table, so I told them "Does anybody need to know what I'm carrying in my personal luggage?" so they started to search inside without emptying it.

In the last trip I was really tired. It was 6 in the morning and I was desperate to get into the plane and get some sleep. I was also "randomly" selected for a search, and that young hispanic lad started to search my backpack. I was pissed off and didn't want to make things easy so I told him "Excuse me sir, would you mind to put your gloves to search my luggage". He was wearing the left glove only and told me: "I'm wearing gloves sir". I retorted unfriendly: "I mean to use gloves in the hands you are touching my belongins with". He asked for gloves and one of his colleagues wanted to put me in my place (in both senses) and told me: "Please sir give two steps back". I told her "I'm fine here thank you". She replied "You have to stay there". So I retorted "But your colleague is searching my belongings and didn't tell me anything about staying there. Whose instructions should I follow, yours of his?" The guy heared the conversation and told me: "Please stay there" and I replied with the biggest of my smiles "Of course sir".

As a side note, a couple of months ago I traveled Madrid to Munich. I had, like everybody else, to remove my belt, watches, wallet, cell phones, keys etc and put them into the x-ray machine, as well as my backpack. I forgot to remove a small x-acto knife a carry everywhere inside my backpack. In neither of the trips was it detected....

Ever notice when you are stopped by cops, they ask:

not "have you been drinking sir?"

instead they always ask:

"How much have you had to drink sir?"

ergo:

the new question's:

should be "Are you feeling safer sir?"
but are instead:
"Are you concerned, afraid or feeling insecure sir?"

The whole point is to keep you scared, concerned insecure so you do not concentrate on the
real issues. Which are the disparities between truth and fiction, poverty and wealth, Hondas and Kawasakis.
The rules in "1984", are coming true. One step at a time Big Brother will control you.

Two things contribute to this situation.

The adage that says those who don't know or have forgotten history are destined to repeat it applies to this.  The things that are happening now have happened before and the results have always been that a lot of people end up getting killed.  The difference these days is the technology available to would-be despots.  It is difficult to be optimistic when you see the degree of ignorance on the part of people about what has happened in the past and how similar current events are to those steps that led to authoritarian regimes.  When Bush made the statement after 9/11 that "you are either with us or against us", it didn't raise the red flags it should have with most people.  That statement has preceded just about every bloodbath perpetrated by governments throughout history.  The Nazis said it, the communists said it, the Fascists said it, and now Bush says it.

The other factor is the natural tendency of people to under-value things that they have not paid for themselves.  If something is inherited by them and they didn't have to do the work or sacrifice to attain it, they will let it go easier than they would if they understood the true value.  Most of the people alive today in the U.S. have not gone through the experiences that previous generations had to in order for the country to survive.  They have had it easy and the assumption on their part is that things continue to be the same.  In the not so distant past, people would have been outraged if they knew there was a camera on every street corner and parking lot.  No one gives it a thought now.  Years ago it would have been political suicide to support some of the provisions that are in the "Patriot Act", now it would be suicide if you don't.  Just the name "Patriot Act" demonstrates what a genius George Orwell was.  Trouble is, scarcely anybody makes the kids read him anymore.

A slippery slope, indeed.
