First Carb teardown!!!!!
« on: September 14, 2009, 07:51:25 PM »
75 honda cb400f

So I decided to take the carbs off last night and tear them down to see what was in them. All in all they look good someone in the past has cleaned them, things look pretty good inside the bowls look decent with some minor varnish buildup in the bottoms. the outside of the carbs look a lot worse than the inside. the o-rings that seal the "t" fitting and the fuel supply between carbs must be seeping and collecting all kinds of stuff.

It has stock jets in it 40 slow and 75 main which is fine by me I don't plan to do anything but make it as reliable as possible. One of the pins that holds the float to the carb looks a little marred and came out a little harder than the rest. should I try to clean it up or get a new one from honda?? I don't want it to keep the float from returning or from floating.

I'm going to soak them in simple green tomorrow and start cleaning them up. Definitely going to take my time and do one at a time so I don't screw something up.

so I figured an overnight soak in simple green then I would spray them down with some carb cleaner and compressed air then some brake clean to get everything left behind. sound like I'm headed in the right direction???

sounds like you are right where I am....just broke the four apart and am going the same route with the addition of a soda blast on mine. I plan to do each one in a small can so that I don't waste the simple green. I got the aviation simple green since I know that it will not harm aluminum. I am stripping the carbs down completely.

I'm glad that I won't need to get a soda blaster. I am just going to take my time and do 1 and 3 and 2 and 4 at a time since they are the same. I'm going to use honda parts and bite the bullet to get the o-rings and everything else I will need.

How bad does a tank need to be in order to justify coating the inside?

never worked on carbs before and i just tore down and rebuilt my set on a 71 cb500k. The bowls were pretty dirty, the bike had sat for 2+ years in a museum.

I didnt soak them, I used an ultrasonic tank, roughly 1hr each carb. fwiw, I would invest in a carb wire cleaner kit as well regardless of cleaning method as you really want to apply a little mechanical action to some of the passageways to clean off encrusted stuff.

Bought a Keyster kit off of Ebay, here is what I noticed. Kit had a needle .27 I think, original was .27909.... or something. The slow was 40 but it was a different size jet than I pulled out of the carbs, smaller body and tiny holes. Thread was the same and supplier asured me it will work.

Was unsure of the float bowl measurement, read the manual a bunch of times. fwiw, I couldnt get it to spec, but they all had the same measruement so I'll give it a go at that.

the 627 carbs have a bunch of washers and a spring on the main throttle rod/axle thingy, including a felt washer. Be sure to note the assembly order before you tear yours down as it is not detailed in the Honda manual and I couldnt find a replacement part number for it.

I have forgotten to lube the moving external assembly, should prob put something on the alumiun ball and sockets. I dont know if any internal parts were to be lubed...

polished the bowls and top cap. The main body I might try and brighten up as well but overall looks champion (might not run).

Have to clean out the tank before I even consider seeing if my work paid off. no sense in doing all that work and running rust through it. So will try the Klean Strip Prep & etch solution tomorrow.

so no pics yet cleaning the first carb to spotless took a little longer than I anticipated. one thing I have noticed that I am not sure if I should be worried about is my slides seem to be very dull compared to other pictures I have seen on the forum. I have seen pics of a few and you need sunglasses to look at em. mine are smooth very smooth dull and medium grey. should I try and take some 00 steel wool to them and see what happens or should I get a dremel with the buffing wheel on it and see if that works. Do they need to be really polished in the first place??? I know that the tolerances are really tight in the carb body to slide so maybe I won't touch em at all. pics tomorrow I hope...trying to get ready for a garage sale this weekend among other things.

The slides are sized to the bore they are in and should slide easily.  There is no requirement to be shiny.  If you make them smaller by polishing, they will slop around the bore and leak air.  This will make tuning highly difficult with replacing the carbs/slides the next alternative.

The carbs are precision machined components.  Steel wool isn't.  Your slides look normal for the Cb500.
