smoke/mist from valve cover breather
« on: September 12, 2009, 11:30:50 AM »
my 77 550f has k&n pod filters and subsequently a smaller pod filter on the valve cover breather.  I notice after riding around for a bit that there is a faint stream of white smoke or mist flowing slowly out of the breather.  Im wondering what this is a symptom of and if its bad to continue riding while this is occurring.  Also, for the first time, last night after 5 minutes at 60 mph or so (5k rpm) I took an exit ramp and as I was sitting at the light noticed some smoke coming out of my exhaust...after riding around town for another 10 minutes or so I didn't notice it again.  Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!
Jeremy

Your crankcase breather is supposed to vent smoke/fumes. Completely normal. The smoke out of your pipes could have been from richness in that it may not have been up to temp yet. Maybe leaky valve guide just burning off from them seeping while parked. Probably nothing to worry about.

Hope ypu have a hose on the breather, if not water can get in.

If your rings are worn you will probably get a bit of smoke coming out the breather.

I haven't seen his setup, but K&N has these CC filters that clamp right on the nipple of the valve covers. Like you said, NOT water proof. I don't think you'd want to run it down and gum up the carb or underside of the airbox. Good product but bad process.
