ants in pants, more like ants in helmet....
« on: September 13, 2009, 12:10:51 AM »
So tonight I went to a friends to watch his band play for a while before heading off to studio to do some homework.  While I was at his place I set my helmet on the ground between the front wheel and the header, that was my first mistake... About 11 or so I left his place and headed over to studio, got complimented on my helmet on the way, always a good thing.  However, when I got there I set it down on my desk and as I got my stuff out and ready I noticed ants all over my desk...  Confused I moved my helmet to the floor and got to work.  A few minutes later I look down and there are ants all over by my helmet on the floor... This can only mean one thing.  I flip it over and sure enough, ants crawling around inside.... awesome... So I try to figure out whether I have any in my hair, I still have no idea whether I did or not, never found one.  Worked for a while, periodically smashing the ants as they crawled out.

The helmet now resides in the freezer.  I'll check on it in another hour or so, because I'm kind of ok having dead ants in there, but I'd rather them not crawl around in my hair.

note to self, no more helmets on the ground.... Especially not for extended periods.  :-\
thats about all I've got, pretty pointless story but thought someone could maybe get a laugh out of it, cause at this point I think its pretty funny, not so much when I first realized it...

Must be the ants liked the looks of a possible new home,

Bum deal.  Keep the helmet in the freezer for a few days.  Even then, be careful about wearing the helmet cuz the buggers can sometimes thaw and revive.

I honestly didn't feel a thing when I was riding. They aren't fire ants or anything, but I am kind of surprised I didn't feel them crawling around...  Thanks for the advice kat, we'll see if I can get em all.  The idea of things crawling on my head while I ride is not so appealing. haha

the sure-fire bug death "solution" I know of (cotton ball dipped in acetone and left to vaporize said bugs in a confined space) would probably do bad things to the polystyrene of your helmet...  if you can, pull out your detachable padding just to minimize places where the little buggers can hide, maybe. :P

I just realized that I typed in kat instead of kit... sorry about that. anywho There is no detachable padding in this helmet. Too old school for those kind of niceties.  I'm just gonna hope that freezing kills em off.  Acetone sounds like a good trick, but I also wouldn't want to damage my helmet. I don't think there ever were THAT many in there.  20-50 but certainly not hundreds.

I had a big ass spider skitter across my forehead and drop off my glasses onto my face and across my lips while riding.  I thought it was out before I got to work to find it squatting against my cheek pad.  A little brown fuzzy bastard, with legs it was about the size of a dime. :o

Yeah, not fire ants up here... luckily. If we did, I probably wouldn't have made it very far before I realized they were there, and I'd probably not be in a good mood at the moment!
blasty, that was probably pretty scary... I'm not real fond of spiders, can't imagine having one crawl on my face riding... Thats pretty big to have hidden inside the helmet on your cheek for the ride!

In the event the freezing does not get them all, there is a gel you can buy you place on a plastic or paper card. Just put the card on a flat surface; and place the helmet over it They will be attracted to and eat it. If they are the little brown ones they will make it about 6 inches and croak. You can get the stuff in any supermarket or department store.

So my helmet is out of the freezer and appears to be ant free.  I still have yet to see any crawling inside or out of it.  Although I think for some time I will always imagine ants crawling on my head when I wear it....
