She Lives!!!.....well nearly....
« on: September 13, 2009, 11:17:07 AM »
After all my timing and tickling and plug woes, I had another run at the CR750 this afternoon. Same setup - petrol starter and lots of praying but this time with the knowledge of four good plug caps and standard B8EAs. She started with the usual back firing and half assed attempts and then with a tiny bit of throttle feathering - two consistent full four potted revs....and then she died again. We managed to repeat this three times only getting two good revs out of her before she went back to firing all over but man they sounded good!

I'm fairly convinced it's all *just* a problem of fuelling now. Pulling the plugs and three are a healthy shade of light coffee colour and No. 1 pot is black as a coal hole in Warrington.

All carbs are set up the same so not sure why #1 would be running rich but it's progress. I haven't a clue where to take it from here so may enlist professional help. Any thoughts though would be welcome.

So close, so darn close....  ;)

Check for a plugged exhaust.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

LMP,

I know all this is freaking you out. Plus your wife has you right where she wants you too  ;D You've done all the difficult technical stuff and now you're near the end. Why not put a REGULAR set of good carbs on it and at least verify that all your mechanical work is good. If it's still acting up then you know you have to dig deeper. If it stops acting up THEN go back to those older CR's once it's all good ?!? You're working with what you think are TWO variables. Eliminate one.

Thanks guys - the exhausts are sooo wide the only plugging that could have happened is if there's an eastern european refugee in there, float heights I checked before installing and they're correct although with all that tickling and not much running the tickled carb  could be the sole cause of the sooty #1 plug.

Jerry - I had a look at my stock carbs and they seem to be good condition externally....internally they have half of the Painted Desert in them and no linkages so it'd be a major task just to get them back on and viable to run with. I may have to consider buying a set off flea-bay which is a bit annoying. The good news is its spurred me on to designing my solo starter :D

That's more like Northwich.....I'm not sure Sandbach is exciting enough to even have a hole!

Ooo you're showing your age there Bryan! I kinda recall Blaster Bates visiting my home town when I was in sixth form - all the guys were trying to get tickets because the interlude featured a half hour nude mud wrestling match!! Sadly they sold out very quickly ....  :D
