Mileage Tax?

REALLY!!?...
 >:(
I don't want any sort of manditory government controlled GPS device on my vehicle... none, I don't care what its for.

hmm, maybe I'll remove it and leave it in the driveway.

What's next? Personal GPS with camera and audio?
Heart beat monitor with a 1 cent-per-beat tax?

that's all.
everything I say is pure speculation and
I have no idea what I'm talking about  ._.

Be a good boy and drink the govt. kool-aid.

Or else they'll lock you up as an enemy combatant in their FEMA camps.

they want to tax those of us who drive to work
sounds like a good idea
why not give a tax credit to those who drive a fuel efficient car?

that's what the tax is for.
The people with fuel efficient cars. They're not making enough off the gas tax with all these gas sippers, so they want to tax YOUR mileage.

I understand the concept..... but how the heck would they be able to do do that. On new cars I can see it, but how could they track the milage on a 40 year old motorcycle for example. I guess they could arrest or fine anyone who refuses to "drink the gov't Kool-Aid" and put the GPS on their ride. OK maybe I answered my own question.

They are "public" roads and it is a "privilege" to use them. Dam it, socialism is every where. In a capitalistic society you would have to pay to use a road because it would be owned by someone. I guess we are screwed one way or another.

I think I've figured this out.  This must be how the state of Oregon expects to tax plug-in electric vehicles like the Volt.

Your right, that is a ridiculous idea. I do not see any state getting away with this though.

yup. exactly. and a handful of other states watching with interest.

and why not. after all, a 3000lb car or a 5000lb suv still wears the pavement whether burning gas, diesel, or coal electrons.

I'm sure the hybrids will sprout studded tires on Nov. 1st just like everyone else.

You guys can now all drive cheaper in Colorado than Coloradoans can.

Like everywhere else the road revenues are falling due to less average miles driven and less gallons of gas used therefore less tax income during times of higher maintenance expenses. Revenure must increase to pay for upkeep so it only seems fair that if the tax on gasoline must go up ALL the people that drive on Colorado roads share this responsibility. HOWEVER we have what's referred to as TABOR, or Taxpayer Bill Of Rights, which does not allow taxes to increase unless voter approved and that just doesn't happen. So, what happened? The gasoline TAXES that everyone pays for the priveledge of driving on Colorado roads stays the same but the licensing FEES paid only by Colorado vehicle owners go up considerably. FEES are not TAXES but cash is cash.

Please enjoy our asphalt at our expense but spend more money while doing so. Thank you very much.

maybe people are driving less like we are told to do to save the oil
so the state is getting less taxes from the sale of gas
so they figured out how to get more taxes

I wouldn't say it is greed, most roads and bridges in states are financed on the gasoline tax solely.

With the newer vehicles using little or no gasoline lawmakers will have to find new ways to subsidize the building and maintenance of roads and bridges.

but didn't someone raise the price per barrel of oil to unreasonable cost?
I don't think they did that cause they were trying to help out.

I think that might be a driving force in the high MPG cars that are so popular right now.

If this all goes through, I personally will want to buy "filthy poison spewing" Cadillac from say.... 1960-66. With a 500ci engine, I'll enjoy every 'kuh-tic' I hear at the pump.
then when I pay for gas I'll only have about 80 miles between fillups and the tax won't effect me so much.

edit: for no other reason than- I'd be a hell of alot happier in that car than I ever would in any fuel efficient vehicle. ever.

The tax per gallon you pay did not increase with the last oil inflation. Kansas stupidly dropped the tax when the last spike hit, now they have little to no money to finish out their highway program.
You can look it up somewhere (tax you pay on a gallon of gas), the states were not reaping crazy amounts of money off the last oil hike, the corporations and speculators made all the big money.

States were hurt greatly when the oil spiked in price, less people buying less gallons of gas, lower tax revenue brought in.

Back in the 1970's there was a "Save a Watt Campaign" here in NY anyway. They gave out stickers in School for kids to paste on light switches. The building i worked in had them on every switch and they removed one bulb from every fixture in the building. Net result. The Power Company applied for a got a rate increase since their profit went down since less power was being consumed.  ???

Yup, I remember that.  I was in a NYC Board of Ed elementary school at the time.  I remember sitting in the dark at times because they were trying to save energy during the Carter "energy crisis".  Good thing we didn't have air conditioning back then or we would have had to suffer without it! ;D

Imagine asking kids today to attend school without A/C.  You'd never hear the end of it.  My town just spent millions of taxpayer dollars a couple years ago to air condition the high school gymnasium.

dukie- I'm ignorant to whatever road projects and problems may exist in many other states, but here in Florida they seem to waste tons of money on the newest road signs, street, and traffic lights, and the roadways are repaved or widened constantly.
------
I do know that when I went to Ohio, the traffic lights were at least 25-30 years old, and the signs were pretty old too. I thought it was a smart way to save money; replace the bulbs not the whole fixture, and replace a sign only when it starts to fade.
but now that you mention it, maybe they just don't have the money.

------
the problem I have with this plan is they want to use GPS to do it.

sure... all it does is "track your mileage"

Back in the 1970's there was a "Save a Watt Campaign" here in NY anyway.

we had that here too.
