Great motorcycle day. New project bike!
« on: September 16, 2009, 10:27:09 PM »
Well today was a good day for motorcycles. Got the '80 KZ550 put back together-ish, bought a '88 650 Hawk GT for $100, and when I got home from the shop tonight I opened the mail box to find my Carbtune wrapped up nicely.

I am feeling very good about today.

I am VERY excited about the Hawk.  Def needs some stuff but the body, frame, seat, tank (small ding on front) are in really good condition.

The ugly....
-PO (original owner) I dont think ever changed the sprockets leading to the splines on the mainshaft being all chewed up and almost gone.
-Both diaphragms in the carbs are split... $114 a PIECE from bikebandit
-Bike has 68k miles on it.

Still for $100 I am going to look for some used parts and was thinking, "F it" and welding the front sprocket right to the shaft.

I had the same Hawk several years ago.  Great, fun bike!  I put CBR600 clipons on mine.  It will be fun,  and its looks similar to a RC30.  May have to squint a bit.

You should be arrested for getting a steal like that. You can't get a hawk like that for anything less than 2,500 around here.

Finding one is hard.  I sold mine to Friend and he keeps at his vacation home.  I have seen more at the race track, but that was 5 or 6 years ago.  I havenot seen one on the streets around here in a long time.  I may have sold mine too cheap.

If it were me there's no way i would be welding that shaft, for 1 its going to screw it for ever and 2 the heat may do something to the integrity of the steel in the shaft. I knew a guy that had a front sprocket failure and the chain ended up around his left ankle and nearly tore his foot off. I would either remove and replace the shaft or remove it and have it professionally rebuilt.
