One word . . . BUH-YOU-TEE-FULL!  You may not want to ride it - hang it over your bar at home.  Nah, scratch that.  You've gotta ride it after the show and give us a ride report!

In your project list you mentioned a GL1000, then I saw it in the background photos.  Not to hijack your thread, but it would be great if you could point me to your GL1000 thread when you get to it.  I think one of those would be the cat's meow to hang a couple saddlebags off of and use it as a tourer.

My S/O has been very understanding...She doesnt like it but she understands... :-\

Tonight I just had to get the seat all prepped. I don't want to open the thing and see its nasty undersides. A little scrubbing and a few secret chemicals and it is totally presentable.

I also snuck in a few quick shop shots.
Thanks for checking it all out.

Ecosse I thought you were watching in the begining?

come to think of it i recall (i think) when you first presented this bike. i was all gaga over it.

i have a lot of 'subscriptions' so i think i don't get sent updates on some threads.

regardless, better late than never!

edit: just went through and i feel kinda dumb for not remembering this thread.  :-[

there's so much to comment on but i'll just say i like the way you did things (ie: color coded and heat shrinked horn wires) and the unique personality of this bike, with it's period mods, make it a stand out. i'll also have to try your company's cleaning products. my bikes neeeds it.

i dig the '13' on the wall.  8)

You have a great eye for detail! I didn't realize the "13" from the shop was in any pictures.
Wurth has a whole line of motorcycle products in Europe that we do not bring to the US. If you have never tried our products before I am sure you will appreciate their quality.

Thanks for the encouragement.

I think you were watching my Hayashi rat project? But that one got side lined to finish "13" The Hayashi Rat is in the back ground of the black and white pics.

Thanks, Bill

Looks like a brand new bike, to me.

Really nice.  Congrats!

Even if you don't win awards...be happy.  I hope you built it for you anyway....so it really dosen't matter, does it?

Did you buy this bike in near mint condition and jsut go throught it?  All the middle weight CB's I ever see are always ROUGH (including mine!)

You are right about building them for yourself. That is my primary goal. The shows are fun because it gets people talking and reminiscing I like the social aspect.
13 was purchased because it was a great starting point. It was a well cared for one owner bike and was a perfect candidate for a mechanical refresh/maintenance and a good 'ol detailing, so that is what it got. So many of these SOHC we SOOOOooo abused that you only have a choice to restore or modify them. When given the chance I like to preserve what was there if possible. I have owned my share of rats too and I love 'em.
So I will be patient, take it to a few shows and then ride and enjoy it. But like all good projects if something intriguing comes up this one may hit the auction block too.

Today is the day 13 gets trucked over to the St.Paul River Centre for the Donnie Smith Bike Show and Parts Extravaganza!

It would ave been fun to ride it over but then I'd have to walk home. Besides right now even the tires are clean.

They make you disconnect the battery and drain most of the gas.

She is loaded up in the "Craptacular Van" and ready to go.

Few last minute packing pics.

It is interesting to note that the 400 fits only marginally better in the van than a CB750K.
Long wheelbase for such a small bike.

With forum members like you guys who needs real flesh and blood friends!?!?

Too bad we all live so far apart I would like to have a ride of super cool guys who like to ride SOHC4s!

The SCGWL2RSOHC4s! Membership is free if you are over 40.

The dues for those under 40 is beer for the old guys after the ride. ;D

Any way. I got the bike into the show and got to see the inner workings of a big bike show. Pretty much like any trade show only full of cool bikes instead "work" items.

I got a chopper t-shirt (now even if I don't win a prize I got something for the effort!)It would have gone well with my super cool goatee that I shaved off for my girlfriends birthday. What we wont do for women...

13 made it to the show. Got it all set up. I know its weird comparing 13 to the big buck choppers that are there but it was hard leaving it in a strange place over night... ???

I got there early to snap a few pictures. And of course the P.O.S. camera let me down AGAIN, only two turned out. Hopefully I will get a couple more tomorrow. I was at the show with a buddy for a few hours. There really is some cool stuff out there. Some of the choppers were truly inspiring. There were a couple of nice Hondas. A real nice 550F and an early CBX both very minty! Their owners were cool too.

Couple more 13 pics from the show.
I am parked between a Budwiser Themed Chopper and a total rat XS650 bobber. Makes for a nice juxtaposition.

I will try for a few more and a couple of the competition on Sunday.

Awards at 3:00 today. Not sure, but I think 13 was a bit to subtle for this show. Even the Honda guys that were there didn't know that the wheels, brakes etc were not stock. I think it was just a little too normal looking in a sea of extended forks and 300+ series tires.

Seriously tempted to ride it home after the show... :D

Hell yes!  Let everyone see you ride it home, while they are putting theirs back on the trailer!

FWIW, Think your bike drowns the others....those customs are now a dime a dozen.  A 400/4 with Magnesium wheels, etc. is unique!

The pics of the bike int he back of the van...that was a first for me!

Now, I need a mini van....THANKS! >:( ;D

We bought that van almost 10 years ago for $700.00. Nothing but tabs and insurance. Even the AC worked until last summer. I can get CB750 choppers with extended forks in it but not GL1000s (yes I tried). The cool thing is to buy a passenger van because when you remove the seats you get all these built in VERY strong tie down points. Cargo vans don't have them. It is not so emasculating to drive a minivan when there is a cool bike in the back!

Traveler's right, 13 rocks!  The 300 series-rear tire, long as a Suburban choppers have run their course.  SOHC4s are where it's at - it's just that not everyone knows it yet.

Can't wait for the inaugural SCGWL2RSOHC4s get together!

I'll mail you a toothbrush to detail 13 if you ride it home today. 8)

Holy smokes guys you were right! Project 13 was popular. I snagged the first place trophy in the Metric class!

I just about crapped my pants (in a good way). The MC loved it and was telling the crowd to go check it out. And when I ran to the bathroom Donnie Smith himself chatted up the S/O regarding the little bugger. Dang fine day!!! ;D

When it came time to leave there was a mass exodus. With some bikes actually being started IN the convention center. (I followed the rules the battery was to be disconnected and only 1/4 tank of gas). The center has only one exit and it is all loading docks. They were not letting trucks in and it was a mess. I took out the factory tool kit reattached the battery. (No way in hell those choppers RE-connected the battery) And I pushed it out side to the loading area. There were choppers all over most being pushed to their trailers. Now I know at least one of you challenged me to ride her home... So we pushed it down the ramp turned on the fuel and waited, I wanted the bowls full before I tried anything. There was a pile of Harley guys surrounding us. I wasn't even sure it would start as I had not started the bike since the whole rebuild you saw here in this thread. So basically it had not run since September. I gave her some choke pressed the button and away she whirred. I love the sound of a 400 starter that funky little whine. After a couple of seconds she popped off. There was so much noise from all the open pipes that I couldn't hear it running. There were two old Harley guys right next to us watching the whole thing. Then my girlfriend walks up flicks down the passenger foot pegs and says lets go... We rode that trophy winning little bugger right out of there straight to the parking lot and into the van...LOL. It was a hoot.
So I didn't ride it home but I did get to ride it! DO I still get my tooth brush?
From Ebay bid to 1st place show winner in 6 months!
Thanks for all the support.

Here is a couple more show pics.

Pretty self explanitory. Maybe a little repetitive.

Last but not least. Packed her back in the truck for the trip home. OK, we didn't go straight home. S/O wanted to celebrate!
