Will 81 650 CV carbs work on an 80 650c
« on: September 16, 2009, 03:20:02 PM »
If this is posted in the wrong place, flog me, but riddle me this before you do, will CV carbs off of a 1981 cb650 work on my 1980 CB650c? The reason I ask is that the more i delve into the carbs I have now, the more I find wrong with them. The PO of the bike must have not known what he was doing because there are things that are stripped, missing, broken, or damaged beyond repair.

Not to mention my bike before this had CV carbs and Im familiar with tuning and setup of those style of carbs. Any thoughts?

Not without swapping to 81 or later heads.

You need 79 or 80 carbs.   or look at the different carbs that people have swapped onto the bikes.

I have both a '79 and '81 engine and several sets of carbs.  Like CBGhia says, there is a spacing difference once they started using the CV's in '81.

Thats what i thought.  >:( I guess Ill have to pay someone to rebuild these turds, because I can't find a kit to rebuild these things to save my life.

I thought my 400 was hard to find parts for, this bike is worse. Not to mention i dont want to unrack the carbs to change the air cutoff valve cause i dread having to put it back together

for what it's worth, cb750 carbs are a direct bolt on item. you have to jet of course, but jets and rebuild kits are easy to come by.

Thats sounds promising, using cb750 carbs. Im familiar with jetting carbs, did it with my VW beetle and with my buddy's KZ. What size jets should I use, I know they would have to be a bit smaller, but how small to go or can i use the same size jets that are in the carbs I have now?

Forgive me for being a bit ignorant here, its been a while since Ive done anything like this and my memory sucks, bad part is Im only 23!

PS what years of the 750 am i looking for here?

For what it's worth, here is what I used on the '79 carbs for my wifes CB650:

Idle (slow, pilot) jet 47
Main jet 110
Jet Neadle 1 to 2 notches down

This is with the stock 4 to 4 pipes and pod filters.

cool that gives me a place to start and work from there. Thanks for the help, now i got to find the carbs. i found a set on ebay like the set Soos has for his 650, but i dunno if those jet sizes will work with those or not.

Ill try to find a set of later carbs and get jets to get them set up
