Honda CB550 oil presure.
« on: July 08, 2010, 12:55:37 pm »
   Hello,
I'm having some oil leaking issues at the oil pump cover on a motor I recently reassembled, also the oil pressure gauge I installed is telling me it's pumping way over the 60lb limit of the gauge. I suspect that is not normal? dose anyone know what the average pressure should be on a stock CB550 pump?

Here's a link to the project:

Blimey, that's a nice bike!!!

I'm also having oil leakage issues around the pump. HondaMan mentions in this thread (second post, paragraph two) http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=73571.0 that the oil pump o-ring size is listed wrongly hence most aftermarket o-rings are too small and leak!

I'm trying to work out the right size so I can change mine.

Sorry, can't help with the oil pressure question...

pm bryanj, he had proper size o-rings for these. Oil pressure will obviously depend on operating temps and rpm.

I'm not sure I ever saw info on operating pressure tests for these bikes, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was something. For example at running temp a VF500F (Interceptor) at 9,000 rpm should make 77psi. I know...apples & oranges, but in a tight engine 60psi isn't much of a stretch.

Yes indeed, nice motorcycle, nice craftmanship.

I recently found this:

http://cb750k2.tripod.com/lubrication-system/lubrication-system.html
Note:
6)
Standard valve setting is 56.9lbs/in.2 (4.0+/-0.2 kg/cm2) at 4,000 rpm engine speed at oil temperature of 176'F (80'C).
BUT...
This is for the 750 and it has a dry sump and may not apply to the 550 at all???

BTW:
Thanks for the complements; hopefully I can figure WTF is the problem here so it’s not just a shiny oversized pepper weight.
