Bike season???
« on: September 17, 2009, 11:16:49 AM »
I keep on hearing this phrase..."bike season"  like its "hunting season" or "strawberry planting season"...a local forum here had a guy who got a flat tire last night and he said "thats my riding over for the season".....its SEPTEMBER!!! Get it fixed!!!

Bike riding is not like hunting or planting strawberries...its a way of life, a means of transportation to work or/and on the weekends. The only time you shouldnt be riding is middle of winter when there is either too much snow or ice on the road and its below 20F. Maybe 2 months of the year here in the Northeast (this is for standard road bikes not ADV bikes which should ride all year round)... 10 months is NOT a season...and for those that ride their bikes only in summer between Memorial Day and Labour Day -WTF!! What a waste of money and a good bike!

Ok rant over  ;)...any thoughts on this please do share but keep it nice  ;D

cheers
Andy

It has to be at least 40F, sunny and dry roads. Getting old and demanding I guess.  ;)

Not for everyone.  For many people riding a motorcycle is just an outdoor recreation activity, like boating, hunting, skiing, etc.

I'm a year-round rider, though.  Many people just can't grasp that concept.  They don't understand that a motorcycle, even a 38 year old one, can be a primary means of transportation and not just a toy.

Even after working the same job for five years and riding a motorcycle to work almost every day, I still get people who are shocked to see me walk in with my riding gear on when it's raining or the temp drops below 40 degrees.

No I understand that. I am just amazed at spending so much money for something thats used only 3 months of the year - purchase price, dealer maintenance, insurance etc..to me its a "soft" mentality...when it gets a little chill in the air (below 60F) then the motorcycle is put away...and yet October and November can be the best times of the year for riding. Are these people soft or what?

Bob- I think for you 40F is pretty good going! At least you are enjoying you 38 year old motorcycle  ;)

Here in Minnesota my season usually runs from mid April to early November but it can vary.  There have been years when it ended in October or stretched into early December.  On the other end I can remember 15 inch snowfalls in mid April or 90 degrees.  Sand and chemicals are used on the roads here to keep them drivable and by spring it has really piled up so I usually wait for the heavy rains of April to wash the roads clean before taking the bike out.  At the end of the season after the first serious snowfall the bike gets put away even if it melts again because of the chemicals.  They would just eat these old bikes up with all their nooks and crannies for the stuff to get lodged into.   It has little to do with wimping out in cold weather.

Uh, you sure the phrase "bike season" wasn't uttered by two middle aged guys in a pick up with a couple of shot guns in the gun rack? Now I've given myself the willies!

I think it was 2006 and 2007 I was able to ride every month of the year as we did not have much snow or ice on the roads in WI. Sure, it was below freezing but I am pretty protected on the Goldwing. I never installed heated grips, but I dress warm with full face insulated snowmobile helmet and I do OK. Sure the people give me strange looks and my wife says I am nuts, but I am smiling the whole time. I always tell my wife, "I am going to top off the bike." ;D

For two years I rode everyday of the year. Snow rain... didn't matter.

I had a Kawasaki 250s "enduro" bike. In the winter I put little studded tires on it (illegal here now) and it ran better in the deep ditch snow some days than it did on the street.

Got pulled over a few times for riding a licensed vehicle off the road way... but the seemed to forget about the tickets when they saw I was serious about riding everyday.

I WISH I COULD RIDE ALL YEAR!!!!....almost enough to want to move south.  But up here when it hits late October/November...riding on a bike usually yields frost bite, and once there's a bit of snow on the ground our motorcycles grow tracks and skis'...ahah  THE snowmachines come out! (bikes get to hibernate)...although it's very sad.  They have their up sides too!

35 degrees is about where I start to say F-it because my hands, neck, legs and balls are pretty much froze after 10mins of riding. Granted I could get so more gear but for the few days it like that where its not snowing or going to snow are few and far between. Once they start putting down salt and crap on the road it becomes pretty sketchy to ride in rush hour traffic. Thankfully its only a couple months here where its like that.

At 70 I can't be bothered to ride in ice or snow anymore, I've already paid my dues as far as winter riding goes now maybe if I had a 175-250 enduro type bike I might be tempted but with a 6 1/2 four no.
