Only in IL can someone be that stupid and then "forget" what they were doing while driving. Good god.

I'm sure there was a  traffic fatality three blocks from my front door tonight.  People need to drive when behind the wheel and stop #$%*ing around.

She should lose her right to drive for LIFE!
Afterall the bike rider lost his, it's only fair, she obviously thought driving was her right and paying scant attention to other road users was the way she would drive.
Decent judges should get tougher on these morons!
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

My first couple of weeks that I began to live down here this summer, 5 people were killed here in Fort Wayne. I wont ride  on Lima road, the last time was the last time,  A lady pulled out of a parking lot and swong the front end of her Trail Blazer in my lane. I confronted her and she said "I" was in "HER" lane. I was pissed and she had this breast cancer survivor sticker on the back of her suv. I respect that no doubt, [my dad is battling prostate cancer] she said I was in the wrong.I was going with traffic, at posted speed. And I ripped back that I was someones son, a brother, a husband, a father,a friend and people like her needed to be more carefull, and I left the situation after my 30 second rant.

"In May, Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran called Zaffke's death an accident that resulted from a "momentary lapse" of judgment. Mermel bristled at that description."

Why the hell is the sheriff so lenient about it? I want to follow this story.

I believe in this state...all you have to do is tell the license branch that a stop sign is red and they give you a license.

Going to add to this...Maybe there should be a law. No radios in cars, purses and cell phones should be put in the trunk while you drive. Anything that could be a distraction need to be in the trunk. If caught with these items in the car...a trip to jail and item taken away and not returned. Maybe that will stop this kind of crap.

This reminded me of the Billy Lane Story.

While we were in Sturgis we ran into a guy from his crew and he mentioned that Lane was to be sentenced in a few days.

Looks like he got six years in prison and a lifetime ban from driving.

From the article:

They asked Burger to impose a sentence that would require Lane to use his celebrity to help save the lives of young people.

But the judge sided with prosecutor Tom Brown who said a non-prison would have sent the wrong message that fame and money buys freedom.

Finally, a judge who won't let somebody off with a slap on the wrist because of their name!  Although Billy Lane's "fame" has pretty much disappeared since he killed Gerald Morelock.  I wonder how much of that 6 years he'll actually serve?

Just read the Billy Lane story and 2 points spring to mind; firstly, he (Billy) manfully admitted his responsability. Many are the cowards that would try to weasel their way out of it. And secondly, I love the way the yanks do things; you fcuk up on the road and somebody dies, they take your licence away.....................for life!
Here? they give you "another chance" 'cos taking your licence away for life goes against your "human rights"!

Yes, he did own up to it, but that's definitely not cause for a pat on the back.  That's what's expected.  It's just very unfortunate that owning up to your mistakes, especially ones that end up killing somebody else, is a rarity in our society.

When did they start doing that? I think we need to go back to the eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth mode of life for a few years, maybe people would start paying attention to what they are doing. And when someone messes with my bike, I'd get to mess with them  ;D

I think its far too easy to get a license. When I had whim to try and get my CDL license, I couldn't believe how much stuff in the study book was plain common sense that I wished ALL drivers should have studied to get their license. I vote that they make the class C CDL mandatory.

If I ever have to go though a window, I hope its at least the driver side door window...

Negligence, plain and simple resulting in a death- manslaughter?
Throw the book at her and hopefully the family sues her nail painting ass off for wrongful death.

I don't really understand the double jeopardy statement at the bottom.

When I decided to get my bike licence about 9 years ago I had to hit the books, well, one book: the highway code, to get my theoretical, then I did what is called "a direct access course" i.e. an intensive bike course, 5 whole days long and at the end of it take my bike test. I'm not ashamed to say that I failed the practical twice and finally got it the third time. But one thing's for sure; it has not only made me a better rider, but also a better driver.

Last time I renewed my license here in Michigan, the first thing the lady at the counter asked me for was the money.  A quick eye test and I was out the door.  I am beginning to believe that the states just want to make money selling plates and licenses and let the insurance companies worry about the carnage later.
