« on: September 16, 2009, 06:15:04 PM »
ok so i am a dumb twat. I got in the buffing mood and was cleaning parts and getting them nice and shiny on my back well without thinking i decided to do the points cover as well not thinking about it being chrome. Well long story short i wet sanded it and now the chrome is jacked. What do you guys recommend doing? i might get a new one but until then what can i do?

About all you can do is paint it.  Sounds like you already have all the prep work done.  Hardest part will be deciding if you want to paint it body color or engine color.

if i painted it then that would be the only part on the engine painted and i think that would look odd dont you think? to be honest i took a second look at it and its not so bad looking, its like a brushed chrome now. Unless a member on here has one i am forgoing the 70 bones for a new one and just keeping this one. Will i have to worry about rust? i didnt wet sand very deep. what do you guys think about just the points plate painted and nothing else, that or brushed chrome

remove small amounts of rust from chrome by rubbing it with aluminum foil

if u didnt scrape throught the chrome u  could wet sand it with 2000 grit then buff it out with some polishing rouge.... if u dont have access to a buffing wheel  sand it to ur satisfaction and try a local owner jewler... you might as well take the stator cover to him also cause it will shine back up.....

There is a "chrome" like powder coating. Makes steel look more like aluminum not real chrome. Might be a short term solution.

Why don't you just get it replated?

Spend 20 bucks on ebay for a snotty looking one that no one wants. So long as it isn't chrome you can spend some time polishing it.

Ebay ones that are in rough shape don't sell for much.

wouldnt it cost a good bit to get it replated, the nearest place is like and hour and half away. i didnt see any that would fit my 550 on ebay, just the 750. There was one for a 550 but it was in really rough shape, and if i can shine those up shouldnt i be able to just shine mine up

70 bucks!?  Where are you getting your parts?  DSS sells them for $40.

70 was from hondapartsnation.com, i didnt think DSS would be any cheaper but you are right, just wondering how much shipping would be on top of that.

Not much, but if you're worried about it just shoot them an email.  They don't charge any more for shipping than any domestic on-line supplier I've ordered from, and delivery usually only takes a week.

just found a cb650 points cover on ebay for 7 dollars. it was in rough shape but being aluminum i can shine it up nice on the buffer. I hear they are interchangeable and that 650 cover looks nice

i only use one rouge per wheel.... i got two different rouges one is a buffing and the other a polishing... take ur time and wash or wipe them really good in between wheels u dont want to get the more abrasive stuff  on the polishing wheel ..... i saw some polishing compound (like rubbing compound) i wanted to try just go to the hardware store or lowes and check them out... but i would definatly get the finest of them ...... do a search on rouges theres plenty of info on it... good luck
