Fluffy good moment story
« on: September 18, 2009, 07:58:08 PM »
So I'm building the fire last night as it has become unseasonably cold and as I shut the fire box door the fire seems to flare like there is some sort of accelerate in there?
I close the door and it stops, at this point I would usually just carry on reading my paper and wait for the fire to catch but it's not flaming too well and that flaring I witnessed has me curious (good job it wasn't some visitor who had dumped a rattle can in there).
I opened the firebox door again and I can just make out a very very small shape huddling down between a log and the firebox wall.
Damn it's a wee bird, the fire wasn't working too well anyway due to my laziness in not setting it correctly so I can reach in and grab the poor thing.
As quick as I bring it out of the fire it leaps from my hand and flits around the room, much to the delight of my "chase anything that moves" fox terrier Berle.
I lose sight of the bird behind a chair but Berle has betten me there anyway, thinking he has probably eaten the wretched creature I go to check and find he has a light paw resting on it's back, the bird seems frightened but not paniced totally.
He lets me grab the bird again and taking it outside I can feel it's poor little heart racing, Java says it'll probably die before I can get it outside.
I sit down and lightly brush the soot and ash off her, she blinks at me then seeing the blue sky takes off like a racing pigeon, go you good thing fly away and don't fall down my chimney again, you might not be so lucky next time, Niko the cat might catch you not Berle the dopey dog. :)
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Hush, sounds like you have your own entertainment right there in front of you! :D Pretty good the way we can tackle a problem with a bike, a car or whatever and doing Manly things all the while, but still be gentle and thoughtful enough to deal with a little bird (or animal)! 8) I've been known to do things such as that myself. :) Good for you! ;)

cool 8)
I find birds in my office all the time. Door is out of the wind, and they come in looking for dog hair etc. to make nesst. They always seem to find their way out.

My Garage is another story, they fly in and head up to the windows to try and get out. Those ones I leave for my 16yr old daughter to catch on a ladder with a cardboard box.

Hush, sounds like you just earned yourself some extra credit in the Karma department. Good man! I saved a wee bunny rabbit from my dog a few days ago.

Here's another bird story, if ya don't mind. When I worked Civil Service, several times, there was a humming bird (don't know if it was the same one each time or not)  that would fly into our shop building and head up towards the ceiling and that was pretty high up. Only way I could figure out to get him out of there was to wet him down and have another guy catch him in his hat. So, we did that (worked out great BTW) and gently put him down, outside the building (we also kinda patted him down, to try and dry him some). He would then fly away and within a day or so, we'd go through the same thing all over again. ::) Silly birds fly in and can't seem to find a way out. :)

Hope you all don't mind me throwing that in there.

Yeah, he did. And sounds like YOU did as well. Small creatures need an assist from time to time and it IS cool to be able to do that. 8) ;)

Hush, What's "unseasonably" cold right now?
I was using the same word to describe our weather lately, global warming?
I had wondered if everyone else had been dealing with this too?

Awwww....this reminds me of my little birdy story. One night while sitting in my library, (doesn't everyone's house have a library?) I noticed from the corner of my eye a fluttering out in the entry hall. What have we here I wondered? I arose from my comfy chair and walked into the hallway only to have my tower buzzed by the infamous Indiana brown bat. The neighbors three doors down could hear me screaming like a little girl. With broom in hand I swung wildly at the vicious beast, venomous drool dripping from it's fangs as it sized up my six foot, three inch, little girl shrieking, 320 pound frame. Oh yes, it knew it had quite a meal in store if it could only bag me. For minutes - that seemed like hours - it mocked me, hanging upside down from my crown moulding, stretching out those rubbery wings, I couldn't take it anymore. I quickly ran and got some big sheets of plastic to trap the killer in the living room where he couldn't escape. Then again with broom in hand and my wife's stainless steel collander as a 'protective bat helmet' I chased the demon around my living room only to have him cling to the wall next to a window and disappear behind the window trim moulding. I should note here that my house was built in 1910 and is masonry construction with hollow clay tiles as the inner wall. The little bastard had evidently crawled into the hollow opening of one of the blocks only to be entombed for eternity....
The lesson I learned here is don't leave windows upstairs open after dark or you will have unwelcome guests!  ;D ;D

Yo Inks, we should be entering Spring about now, not sure about global warming but global cooling seems about right, yesterday was 24 degrees, day before 12!

I would much rather have a bird in my house than a bat.

+1 on the Karma tickets.  ;D

seems like we (me and my 2 boys) "relocated" a dozen+ small frogs and garden snakes this summer.
it has been really hot and dry. they must have come out of their typical damp/wooded areas looking for water.  found them in the oddest places around the house.

It feels good to help small animals. Had a bird smack the bay window of my home. Went and checked on it and it was stunned pretty good. Took a while for it to pull itself together and fly away. During that time, I showed my kids the bird and let them touch it softly. Maybe give them the idea of kindness to animals even when hunting.
Week or so ago, I saw something moving across a street going into town. Found out it was a tiger salamander but a young one. I pulled back around and got out and picked it up and moved it into the ditch. Tiger salamanders do not have teeth really, it is more like a bone plate. They are really neat lizards and no threat at all. Found one by more home last year about 3 times the size. Took it inside and got some pics and found out what it was. Showed the kids the small one and let them touch it a bit before releasing it.
I like to think that I am opening my kids up to nature more and hopefully teach them respect of nature.
Besides, animals are cool!
