starting glitch
« on: December 05, 2005, 08:32:13 AM »
Fellow's-
Hey, a couple of weeks ago I posted I was having trouble with starting via starter button.  I since got a new solnoid.  Once hooked in, I still get a "click," Then nothing.  no lights no nothing.  If I dis/reconnect the battery, reset so to speak.  All power seemes restored.  push the button, then right back to nothing.  I've been able to kick start.  even now though with our cold weather that's not working.  Any helpful hints?

look into the key switch for bad contact, check the starter circuit for a short including the button.
Sounds like the black wire wire may be good start.
Wire colors for the starter system are red yellow and black.
Has the wiring harness been molested with a hand full of crimp splices? If so get rid of all that  junk, solder and shrink tube all new connections.
Good luck.

Do you know if the starter works?

Dame yankee, that was going to be my next check.    Actually it turned over once when I first hooked up the new starter solnoid.I've checked rechecked the wiring, I'll look into the key switch as well,  Its strange evrything was firing about two onths ago, then one day nothing.

You can test the starter easily by shorting the two contacts on the solenoid with a screwdriver.

okey, I'll give it a shot...If nothing, that pretty much indicates, the starter motor is messed up? or can it be maintainced?

There are carbon brushes at the end of the starter motor. New brushes fixed my intermittent starter.

Has your starter seen a lot of use?  I had a CB550F starter that got intermittant and would periodically behave as though there was a weak/dead battery in the bike.  The cause turned out to be the bushings for the armature had worn to the point where the armature was allowed to make intermittant contact with the motor frame.  This shunted much of the battery + power directly to the return post. I replaced the bushings.  But, a replacement starter would have fixed the problem, too.  The CB750 might have the same design starter, if not the same starter motor.  But, I don't know that for certain.

Two Tired:  sound's very similar...I've been using the starter alot when tuning the carbs, eventually the intermittent stuff started to happen.  This weekend I'll tear it apart and test the starter as well. I'll let you know whne I get into it.  I've pretty much singled out everything except the starter.  wiring, ignition switch, battery, starter button and solenoid.
