Does a homemade gasket need special install?
« on: September 20, 2009, 08:10:10 AM »
Hello there.  So I am replacing the clutch plates on my '75 CB550 and  my old gasket ripped while I was removing the cover.  I cannot get hold of a new gasket; I have a whole engine set on backorder and I cant find them individually.

Anyway, I decided to make one so I bought some gasket paper that was close to the original gasket thickness, traced up my clutch case cover and I cut out a gasket.

Now my question is, is there any special care that needs to be taken when installing a homemade gasket?  I'd rather not use any sealers if not necessary.  Also, all the posts on gaskets I have read refer to greasing the gasket, what grease should I use, motor oil? bearing grease?

TIA

I use a very thin layer of gasket maker in the installation, mainly because it is good insurance, and holds the gasket in place, plus I don't want to take it back off. Just use some thinner to clean up anything that sqeezes out.

Any grease should work, if your screw holes are not crisp & clean, kit may move when you set the screws in.
