NYC Routes

Anyone know of any good rides around New York City? I just moved to the area and am still trying to figure out the lay of the land.

Yes there are plenty, and we have some members in the City and I live in Northern Westchester. Could you be more specific as to where you are in the City?

Lower East Side, right near the Williamsburg bridge. Riding in the city gets pretty hectic so Ive been hoping to find some nice routes nearby.

I meet a lot of riders from the Boroughs that come Noth for the scenic and less hectic roads. The trip up the river North is really nice. There are three destinations you can Google map and stay along the River. Bear Mountain, Perkins Drive, Seven Lakes Drive.
On our side of the River, Cold Spring or Beacon NY. Try to use Rt 9N or 9D for these runs. Guys travel from LI to come up here.

That does sound nice. Ill be sure to make that ride eventually, hopefully before it gets too cold. I also came across this website which sounds like it has some good recommendations:

Have not yet gotten a chance to check any of them out, but they are going on my list. That, and a trip up to the woodstock playing fields.

There are a lot of good routes outside of the city. Some of us into the vintage scene will meet up and take day trips  and overnights upstate. Catskills have some amazing roads as do most of the towns along the way. the trick is to get out of the city early then get on the back roads. traffic is the biggest pain in the ass. we also make it out east sometimes. a friend is planning a brooklyn to boston to brooklyn run at the end of the summer.

things are a little slow in the winter now but it'll pick up when the weather clears

You cant go wrong with the Saw Mill River Parkway - going up or down and right out of Manhattan. I cant wait to ride this in the Spring...only done it by car (manual) and it was a lot of fun. Probably best not to do it at night due to the deer....however the road is mostly quiet outside rush hour. Weekends are great.

I drive that that POS Saw Mill Parkway everyday. In Westchester County there are a lot of fine roads on both sides of the Hudson. Route 9, 9A and 9M are really nice roads. You can connect to 301 from them and go thru Farhnstock State Park and have a beer in Cold Spring, or continue on 9M and do the same at Beacon.

look at the roads around West Point and Storm King sculpture park. As well as, over by Minnewaska State Park. good roads all around. we should plan a spring sohc4 ride.
