Home built removable trunk cb 550
« on: September 07, 2009, 09:17:30 am »
This is what I did on Sun 9/6/09 my full face helmet  misses fitting in it by about 1/2" if I change the weather seal lip it will go.

It will hinge at the top and have a keyed lock, the box will be easily removable with some pull pins. I am thinking orange to match and some "CB550 SST" touring addition stickers any ideas on finishing it?

You can be honest, love it, hate it?

Depending on time and how this turns out I am considering some side bags "boxes" to match

Trunks are always goofy looking to me without side bags. That being said, even before I was traded a pair of side bags I was going to put a trunk on my bike. The storage they provide more than makes up for their slightly unappealing look. As for yours, nicely done! Paint it up with the orange you will be more noticable! I'm even adding some tasteful (well imo) turn signals on mine when I get it done.

Looks good!  The only concern I would really have is that somebody behind you in a tall truck or SUV may not be able to see your brake light.

I thought about the light issues as well.....

I have had several thoughts, 1. just add a light and turns signals to the box, should be a fairly simple plug addition. 2. lower or remove the rack and mount the trunk in it's place then put the factory light and signals on the box. I am leaning toward the first, I want to leave the bike as unmolested as possible

I am going to look for a lock tommorrow

I worked on the trunk for awhile today after a short ride

I decided to change directions and cut the back out to fit around the back rest.

paint by the weekend

Do I paint it orange to match the bike or repaint the tank and side covers to match the trunk. Ideas on colors?

I don't have any current pics but the plastic work is done, it's ready for primer and paint.
The question is the bike is a bone stock 550 ss do I paint the box orange to match the bike or a differrant color all together?

I was thinking Kandy Brandywine with a silver panel on the tank and a silver strip on the box.

What do you think? stock or not?

Two suggestions:  1)  paint it black, it looks too damned big on that bike, but it will look smaller in black.
2)  Put an LED stop/tail light on the back of it to increase visibility and solve the SUV/truck/bus problem.

the recess in the back helps the size appearance and the taillight issue, it no longer hangs out passed the existing luggage rack. I will be putting either a small fairing or windshield on it when I put the box on it.

Does it have to be damned, can it just be a little big for the bike, slightly over sized or how about just plain ugly?

Don't get me wrong, I think it is a fine piece of equipment to have, with lots of utility.  I don't think it would be particularly useful if it were any smaller.  Maybe it could be made to look smaller.  Maybe black with very thin orange "racing stripes"?  Or black with orange shelby-style skunk stripes?

maybe I could sell ad space, get it wrapped ;D ;D you ever see the redbull cars running around?

It will be striped regardless of color, I think the screen on the other end will tone it down.

I am want to take a brown county park ride in a couple weeks (maybe 400 or 500 miles)

I'm voting for black with Orange stripes.

How much does the trunk weigh in it's current state?
