adjusting valves on cb350 twin...quick question for the experts
« on: September 28, 2009, 06:18:37 AM »
in my shop manual, it says something to the effect of, "make sure the eccentric indicators are facing out away from the points", where the little "T" mark on the valve adjustment bolt needs to point outwards.
on my left cylinder exhaust valve, the mark is pointing in when i have the clearance properly adjusted.  is this a problem?  i couldn't find anything searching the board.

I cant help on the original timing marks, since both my 350 twins(race bikes) have the charging system removed and run electronic ignition. But I adjust the valves by turning the engine over and bring each cylinder to top dead center on compression, so both valves are closed, and both rockers have play. Do your adjustment, and move to the other cylinder.

Hope this helps,

Tim

On the 350 twin, the rocker shaft has an eccentric lobe on it where the rocker arm mounts.  That's what modifies the clearance as you turn the shaft.  So, you can achieve correct rocker-to-valve clearance at two positions but one is incorrect to be using.

Loosen the locknut and rotate the shaft in the direction that increases the clearance.  Spin the shaft all the way around until clearance starts reducing again and set the valve clearance.  That should put the index mark in the correct position.

THAT'S what i'm talking about!  thank you for the advice!
on my way home last night, all of a sudden my left cylinder crapped out like it wasn't firing.  maybe a stuck exhaust valve?  i'll look at it today, and readjust.  thank you again!

Wow.  I don't know how I missed that particular.  Gonna have to go back through the valves now and see if I did it right.  She runs but no where near how she should.

Good work paying attention to the details.
