looking for my next project, would like input on what to avoid!!
« on: September 28, 2009, 04:22:10 AM »
I'm in the last stages of wrapping up my 80 CB650 Custom build and already thinking about my next build. I'm not sure yet what I want, if I want a runner so I can wrench on one bike while I ride the other, or if I am looking to do a customization (bobber, cafe etc.)

What I would like is input on bikes to avoid, or maybe even a "I'd own it again, but be aware of this quirk" (ie the 650 carbs are a PITA to rebuild because the kits are so expensive approx $200 if you have to do everything).

Thanks for any input you can give.

Brandon
Sure it's for sale! How much you ask?? Well, how much are you willing to pay??? Now triple it, that's the price!

avoid Virago's like the plague.  some of the V-four honda's have cam and oiling issues too.

Ohh really?? Why? I rode a buddies 88 or 89 750 and loved it. I need to change the shifter springs, but it seemed to have some good power. What about them is to avoid?

Thanks for the input.

Hey, looking forward to seeing some photos of the 650 when you finish it.  3rd gen of the 750 v4  magnas are a good bet. Lots of power and a comfortable ride. CB750 are always a winner. The cb550 and 500 are also nice bikes but parts are a little harder to find.

myhondas the decals came out FANTASTIC!! Once I get the stuff polished I'll post pics and if you want would be happy to post them in your services offered thread. Hopefully have pics of the bike back together next week, and with luck a story of how it started perfectly  ;)

I had a 500 it was a good little bike, if I could find another one for the right price I'd happily pick it up.

Thanks for the heads up on the Virago electrical issues.

forgot to mention....early magna's   v45 & v65 had the oiling problems... later years like my 96 vf750cd has NO oiling or other problems other than lack of duel front disc.

Haha, I don't know what I did to deserve her but my wife is VERY understanding of all this. She has been very supportive of the current build, and once I promised not to spend so much time and money on the next one she has given me her blessing. I'm a very fortunate man.

I've seen a few build threads on I think it was the GT500's? I thought those looked cool. For a good price I'd pick one up in a heart beat. Part of the reason I enjoy working on bikes is all the stuff I'm learning, so learning 2 stroke would be just as much of an adventure. Any particular models you would look for, or avoid??
