cleaning out the inside of my fuel tank
« on: September 22, 2009, 09:41:52 AM »
on my K8 I'm beginning to see rust inside my tank,  and I'm wanting to know whats best to strip that away and seal my tank so I dont lose a really nice fuel tank?
These bikes dont die, they hibernate until the right person wakes them up again.

Look in the FAQ's and the "Tricks & Tips" sections.  There are several threads on different methods for doing this.

I agree with the previous poster, check out the tips and tricks section for various different options.

For my 400F tank restoration, I went with KBS Coatings tank kit, which included a high strength cleanser, Rust Blast (which is an acid etch) and their final coating.  It worked really well for me, took out all the rust and varnish without any issues.

Good luck,
Don

Most motorcycle parts stores carry POR-15 or Kreeme tank liners. They come in a bundle which includes stripper

I picked up the Kream tank lining kit.  Its about $40 and it had the rust eliminator/ metal etcher, acetone to takeout the extra water and the lining.

It takes about a weekend to do it right.

I just finished cleaning out my tank with the Arm & Hammer super washing soda/electolysis method. It was impressive and I thank the contributors who turned me on to this method. It took about a week and I found that the method could be speeded up by dumping out the rusty solution every other day and refilling. This method works. I'm not lining my tank with any gunk, however.
