Help for a newbie
« on: December 07, 2005, 07:33:14 AM »
I recently got my first bike, a 81 cb650. I learned alot about carbs from a knowledgable neighbor, the bike is in pretty good running condition. I was just curious if anyone who has experieince with these bikes can give me any headu/ advise on common problems, things to look for. I allready have a list of some relatively small things I am going to work on, but just curious if any of you bike veterns had some advise.
Thaks,
E

p.s. funny story- this bike ran when I got it, but not great. While doing some intial work on it, I was cleaning out the gas tank and believe it or not, a dead mouse was in there, and looked as if it had been in there for a while. The tank definately wasn't dry- so i was flabergasted. Anyone had something like this happen to them.

Not at all bike related, but 12-15 years ago we had a plumbing problem in the downstairs bath. The toilet was barely working, drained real slow. This is in the A.M. when both my wife and I are trying to get ready for work. I tried the old plunger and snake routine to no avail. Had to leave it until we got home in the evening. Tried the plunger snake again, still no good. Finally called a plumber, after hours rates  :o.. He tried all the same things, finally says he has to remove the toilet to see what's what.

Anyway, the wife and I are in the living room watching TV and all of a sudden we here the plumber yell, "Holy sh_t!, Holy sh_t!, I don't believe it!" I ran in and what is sticking its head out of the drain, a squirrel. Dead of course. We live under a rather large oak tree, all I could figure was the damn thing fell, or crawled down a stack vent on the roof and took the first turn which would have been the bath. Big mistake by a pretty dumb squirrel.  ;D Big bill to homeowner.  >:(

Aside from the odd animal death, Main things to do are to change oil and do valve adjustment and make sure timing is on. Check everything pretty much as any little thing can cause problems at 60. Brakses and bearings are big thing to check.

No such luck on the discount, but he did run out to his truck to get a camera (why a plumber has a camera..?) and bagged the damn thing. He wanted to show it to the guys back at the shop because he said they wouldn't believe him.  :D

cb650.net is also a great resource for the CB650 bastard child.

Why do our parents the CB750 and CB550 hate us, you ask?  They must be jealous of the CB650's superior balance of power and manuverability!  Don't hate us, 750 and 550 riders...  Love us!

As for dead animals in funny places... My sister took one of those old round metal Army canteens on a camping trip one year.  She forgot to screw the cap on before she went to sleep one night, woke up the next morning and took a swig with breakfast.  She said, "This water tastes funny" and handed the canteen to me.  One whiff and I could tell something was wrong.  I dumped the water on the ground and out slipped a little dead field mouse.

Suffice it to say breakfast was ruined by the unexpected explosive vomit.

Of course this is the same sister that drank half a jug of 3 weeks expired milk before saying, "Does this taste funny to you?"

Ahh I dont hate the 650. I would own one. So I see nothing wrong with them. They just had a short production run.

I'm not sure if I did this right, but this should be a picture of the aforementioned mouse.

I still fail to see how a mouse got into a gas tank unless the lid was left open a long time and was empty!
