The pride of ownership and doing it yourself!
« on: September 23, 2009, 07:55:55 PM »
So I bought my 78 CB 750F back in the spring and had been taking short rides until I could get several issues worked out.
First I couldn't keep it going with out having the choke the whole way out the entire time I rode it(up to 30 mins.). It would miss and
the idle would jump uncontrollably.  Finally I'd had enough when a mechanic friend that used to own one pointed out that the throttle
return cable was missing.  So I put in a call to several vendors and sourced the parts that I needed. I bought a used petcock then I got NOS throttle/return/choke cables for my gal and then ordered up a NOS carb rebuild kit and accelerator pump kit.  Mind you the guy I bought the bike from said that he had had the carbs rebuilt 1.5 years ago.

Upon disassembling everything I realized that the shop he said he took it to was less than acceptable.  I won't bag on the shop but I will say that the mechanic that worked on it was nothing short of a hack that had no business working on Hotwheels.  Please understand that I have some mechanical experience and come from a large family of technicians and mechanics. I am going to list everything I've found wrong and fixed.

Choke cable- worn out/barrel was not sitting in the cage instead was down and off to the side.  Replaced and reformed the cage to fit!
Throttle cable- worn out.  Replaced and adjusted
Throttle return cable- Missing.  Replaced and adjusted
Petcock- Pop rivet came loose (alot of crap down in it too).  Replaced
Carbs- Gaskets looked to be 8/10 years old/accel pump and most of the fuel lines looked to be original, garbage everywhere.  Separated the carb bodies and rebuilt myself (my first time!). Also set them with a single vacuum gauge.( no coin for the 4 gauge setup yet) Damn that was hard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Filter box and tension straps- Air box has stripped fittings and all of the straps were bent left to right and out of round.  Flattened and re-rounded straps, looking for a replacement air box.

Points and Condenser-  Almost welded together! Burned beyond belief.  Replaced and gaped properly (Dyna S on next tune)
Plugs-  Nearly fouled.  Cleaned/gaped and will replace as soon as I'm sure of the rest of the tuning is done.

Now my gal is running strong! She's also showing what needs to be attended to next.  She's officially a basket case but in time I'll have her running the way she's supposed to!  I've decided to call my little Japanese gal Yoshimi after the song by the Flaming Lips.  Thanks for reading and let me know what you think.  :)
