Suitable line for brake fluid?
« on: December 07, 2005, 06:25:58 PM »
I'm searching for a suitable replacement for the hose that connects the rear brake fluid reservoir to the rear master cylinder on my 1978 CB750F.  I went to my local dealership today and they told me that the original part has been discontinued, but the guy at the counter gave me a length of 3/8" fuel line that appears like it may fit.  From what I can tell it looks to be two-ply with a layer of woven fabric between the inner and outer plies.  I've heard horror stories about how brake fluid can eat up regular rubber hose so I'm reluctant to try it.  When asked if the hose would stand up to brake fluid the guy replied, "We'll see..."  Not too confidence inspiring to say the least.  The hose has SAE30R6KX stamped on the side.  From what I understand, the hose is not pressurized, it just acts as a feeder to the master cylinder.  None of the auto parts stores in my area have had anything better than this.  Help please!

Well the only bright point I can say is that it is at least you rear brake! What I would suggest, while being somewhat pricy, is to get braided lines. you could probably also get them from david silver spares. I would not put my life on a questionable tube. Maybe someone else knows more about that number though. Otherwise you might be able to use a synthetic brake fluid which is not so harmful. Just clean out all the old fluid. I used synthetic and contrary to what some might say, it works every bit as good as any dot3 I have used.

You don't want to use Gas Line.I put a Remote Reservoir Master cylinder on my 69 Suzuki and the Previous owner put Gas line on it in place of the Original. The line is Holing up itself but the Brake Fluid is Sweating out onto the surface.I believe Silicone Tubing will work if you can find it.Regular Clear Tygon Gas line will work I think. ???

if you have a store in town that sells hydraulic lines and fitting they should have what you are looking for. most of these places will even make the lines up for you. bring in the old one for sizing if possible.   braided lines are always good.

I use " gas station bell " hose. The little hose you run over at a gas station that rings the bell? It is oil resistant and a $ a foot! I've only used it with dot 4 so I don't know about dot 3. Any hose that is oil resistant will work, fuel line is not. Can anyone tell me about changing over to a different fluid than dot 3? I think mine is the original fluid in my 78! Looks pretty nasty.
The thing about common sense is that, it's not that common.

Contact HEL USA for a braided rear line, or Sirisonic in Canada, and get the proper part. Everytime you jury rig, it will come back to haunt you.

I'll sell you a used OE, in good shape, rear line if needed. I recently upgraded to SS lines and IMO is well worth it if you can afford it.

I think teach is just looking for the hose that connects the reservoir to the master cylinder, not the high pressure line. Any oil proof hose will work. All it has to do is hold fluid, it is under no pressure. The $1 a foot stuff that service stations use has worked for me on the 30+ custom bikes I've used it on. Don't use fuel line!!
