Weepy inlet rocker arm ends....
« on: August 19, 2006, 02:05:28 PM »
I rode the bike 600km one way to here last weekend and then jumped off and parked it. Haven't ridden it all week. Since it's a nice day I decided to check the valves and do an oil change.

Anyhoo, while I was warming her up before doing the oil change I noticed that there is a tiny amount of oil weeping from behind the inlet rocker-end bolts (at least that's what I assume they are)...the bolts with the allen heads (5mm?) just below the head cover.

Anyone ever experienced this before? Is it a question of re-torquing the bolts, if that is what they are? I don't have my manual with me to be able to see exactly how everything is configured.

Thanks, in advance, for any input.

If it is just the valve cover - tension them down just a tad more all around - wipe off the excess oil then inspect again after your next ride

has the bike been parked on the centre or sidestand

if on the sidestand does the oil leak on the leaning down side?

It's definately not the valve cover leaking....new rubber gaskets all round. It's like it is actually coming out from behind the 'bolts' on the side of the head, which are congruent with the ends of the inlet rocker arm inside.

The bike has been parked on the centre stand all week.

There is an o-ring oil seal in a groove in the rocker arm shaft cap bolt. It is probably leaking.

His sig says he has a CB650, which I thought was evolved from the CB550, which has the o-rings on the aluminum cover at the side/end of the cam cover...is that bolt in the pic from a CB650??

I have those cover o-rings on my "to do" list, as I took the covers off and polished them, then re-installed the old o-rings (they are an odd size).   :-\

Got you on both forums, Ibsen. Many thanks!

Yes, the bolt on the picture is the end cap for the 650. It is bolted directly into the rocker arm shaft. The shaft itself is held in place in the rocker arm cover by a pin that fits into a groove in the shaft. This pin has a threaded end that is secured by a nut.
This is the CB650 rocker arm cover:
