ROKU!!!
« on: September 25, 2009, 04:31:21 PM »
The ROKU is freaking SWEET!!!  Netflix sells them for $100 plus shipping, but I got one on craigslist for $65 shipped (I'm a cheap SOB, what can I say  ;)).  After I ordered it, it occurred to me that movies get a little choppy on my PC sometimes.  I was worried that I may have a problem with that happening on the TV, but it doesn't when it's streamed though the ROKU.

I figured the movie forums would be the correct placement for this post.

I've been using my xbox360 for the same purpose.  I don't even play games on it that often, but we use it all the time to watch stuff from Netflix or Hulu or straight off the computer.  Check out "PlayOn".  It's an application that lets you easily watch any online streaming video or any video files stored on your computer on your TV.

Did you mod your 360 Gordon, or is that something you can regularly get?

Nope, no mod, It's a normal function of the 360.  It's hooked into the wireless network in our house.  I know there are other ways to connect your TV to your PC and watch stored or online streaming video, but I wanted a 360 anyway, so it was just icing on the cake that it does all that other stuff, too.

XP home here, too.  No Windows Media.  If you don't have, or don't want to use Windows Media ( I fall into both categories) you just need to download an application that allows your 360 to speak to your PC.  I tried TVersity first, which is free, but buggy and hard to use, and had limited capabilities as of the last time I used it a few months ago.  I then purchased and downloaded the PlayOn application which has worked great and is still getting better with new capabilities being added.
