77 CB750 Cafe, first bike, first build, first post...
« on: June 14, 2014, 03:40:08 PM »
So I've tried to post three times already it gets stuck loading then I end up with a blank page again! so lets see if it works this time!

I just picked up a 1977 Honda CB750 last week, its been off the road for a few years and is a bit rough, most of the electrics are off of it, tank and all fuel lines and carbs are off, seat and fender are off and brackets have been removed already, it have a GL1000 front end on it, frame and the gas tank have a bit of rust, engine turns, appears to shift. I'll post some pics of it too.

Where I plan to go with it; this summer I just want to clean it up and get it running then I will slowly go through it and make it look nice, this winter I plan to strip it down and have the frame sandblasted and powder coated and rebuild and paint engine and transmission. I want to go with a real minimalist look I want to get rid of the battery and electronics and the oil tank hopefully hide all that stuff in the seat or maybe get rid of a battery and just go with a capacitor and a kick start. I want to try to hide the turn signals as much as possible posibbly use LEDs and make them into the headlight and tail light some how.  Originally I wanted to go all black with the bike but it came with a white tank and although the tank needs to be painted I think I may keep the white tank and go with a white/red/black color scheme instead of all black. I like the look of clip on bars but right now I kinda of like the set that came on it and I may keep those for a while. Originally I wanted clip on bars and to get the triple tree with the oil lights and all that in the tree and a small digital gauge cluster, with the bar its got the gl1000 tree on it but I put the original Honda bracket with the lights in it on and I like that look I'm wondering it I can find a small digital display that could fit inside that piece?  Not doing anything fancy really just keeping it simple, having to rewire the electronics is going to be fun though!

First I'm going to order a parts kit for the carbs (I've read the parts kits aren't great and I should just order parts? I've never done carbs before I assume there must be a good write up on here some place?) While waiting for the parts I will clean up the tank and seal it then work on putting the carbs back on and hoking up all te fuel lines, I want to get rid of the airbox also. and from there I will work on the electronics first just get it running then figure out what I'm doing with the lights. I have to figure out if I am going to keep the GL front end I may put the stock back on as I have that too haven't decided yet. I am going to keep the stock controls but I need controls for the front brakes I have several left side controls but no right ones.

So thats kinda of my plan, if this post works I'll post pics of the bike now and then a few pics of my inspirations for this project!

These are just a couple of my inspirations for this project, they are 550s but I want to get that look on a 750. For now I'll leave the oil tank but I want to try to build a oil tank/oil cooler..

I really liked the all black look at first but now seeing the white tank and looking at some of these bikes I think I may still go with the black engine but with the white tank I think that might look nice, I really like the the simplicity of just the black Honda on the tank but I like the old school logo too with the black and red I put up a pic of a bike with that not a 750 but I think it might look nice on the bigger tank of a 750? So just have to see how things play out I can only hope that my project comes out even half as nice as these!

Easy E,

Looks like you have a 77K bike with a Super Sport tank.  The SS tanks are harder to come by, and in my opinion have much better lines than the K tank for years 77-78.

I have a 77CB750K bike with a SS tank and GL1000 front end.  You will be happy about the GL front end, especially if you rebuild the internals with new Race Tech springs and emulators.

Still waiting for my carb parts and tank sealer. I've cleaned out the tank and starting to plan out the electrics. I'm trying to find out if they make a smaller coil pack I could use?? Or what a good pack would be to replace the stock. I switched out the stock points with the dyna s ignition.

I have a regulator rectifier looking at batteries now, I want to put everything either under the tank or hide it under the seat but keep it out of the triangle so looking for a small battery and starter solenoid. I want to get rid of the starter button on the bars and the ignition/frame lock and mount ignition/starter switch off the frame .

I cleaned up where the fender and seat brackets were cut off, smoothed that out.

I sealed the tank and then broke it trying to get the brackets for them emblems off, I wanted to fill it in and just have it smooth on the sides, one side came off fine the other took the spot weld with it so tank has a hole now, I have other tanks to use until I decide what I want to do. It was rough inside there so might just find something new in a similar style.

I've started laying out the wiring harness; eventually I want to try to hide everything but for now I just want to get the harness laid out; I'm going to use as much of the stock harness and connectors as possible. But the issue I have is with the regulator rectifier, (mine is a SH532-12 1.8), it has three yellow, one red heavy shielded, one green and one black wire coming out, all the diagrams I have found show a seventh white wire?  So I'm not exactly sure what goes where?

I figured out everything except for the white wire? One diagram I saw just had it terminated?
