Lets say i don't drain the oil out of my 76 cb550 motor and I wanna remove the oil pump. Will most of my oil drain out? And is it OK to use slightly thicker O-rings as replacements? My Honda dealer says I can't buy a o-ring kit, but I can buy a whole new oil pump assembly! I have a large o-ring selection, it seems I can find the right size, but not thickness. So far I've replaced the spring cap(perfect o-ring match) and side cover(right size, but thicker than stock). Now will all my oil drain if i remove the pump?

Thanks, Nomad

So, I took the pump out and did not drain the motor. If you put a pan under neath the pump,  very little leaks out! I now have replaced all the O-rings, but what do you guys think about "550_ko"'s reply? Anybody? I'm thinking it'll be alright, but I'll wat for more replys.................It's the o-ring oil pump side cap, bad idea to use a slightly thicker o-ring?

The oring cross section must, of course, seal but still allow the oil pump cover to make full contact the metal body. The more clearance between the pump rotor and the cover, the lower your oil pressure from the pump.
If the oil pressure is low enough, fried cylinder walls/pistons and bearing journal damage are possibilities.

For real? So the metal cover must make contact with the pump rotar, I noticed the wear marks on the cover. I thought the thicker o-ring seal would be better, cus it would stop it from making contact marks! Now I have to take it apart again! Good think I have a extra pump here, I'll use that o-ring. Because,  the other one broke. Can anyone recomend, a place to buy a new one? Nothings better than new o-rings, seals and gaskets!

Thanks! L.A. Nomad..........

P.S. I was ready to zoom zoom, but good thing I have a computer in my garage!
