routing for fuel lines to carbs on CB550
« on: April 22, 2005, 07:32:28 PM »
Does anyone have a diagram or image of how the fuel lines from the tank to the carbs are routed on a CB550? I took a reference picture of mine before I took them off, but I'm not sure that the PO had them on correctly in the first place.

For example, only one of the hoses was routed through the plate that connects the carbs. Is that how they are supposed to go? Also, it looks like one of the hoses was routed over the line that connects the carbs on the left (1 and 2) and under the same line on 3 and 4.

Any help is greatly appreciated. This is my first time rebuilding the carbs and I hope to have this beast running soon!

Thanks,
Brian

My 550 is a 75 k model so yours may be different but I doubt it.  As you look at the bike from the left (shifter side) and assuming your petcock it the same is mine,  the line closest to you coming from the petcock runs to the connection between the #3 and 4 carbs.  This is your primary.  As Im sure you can guess, the line behind it runs to the the connection between 1 and 2 and is your reserve.  BTW, where are you located?  Good luck!

Thanks. I'm in Seattle. Here are the pics that I took before the rebuild. I'm guessing that as long as the lines aren't kinked or blocked that putting them back the same way will not hurt. It just seemed odd that they were routed exactly opposite of each other.

Both lines are supposed to run through the holes on the plate, the line farther away also runs through the clamp as in your picture and then runs parallel with the other up to the petcock. Makes no difference really once they can reach and are not kinked. Not sure about the "Primary" and "reserve" lines I think one just feeds 1&2 the other 3&4, reserve is catered for in the long tube in the petcock.

Thanks Paul. I bought new fuel line today and started to put them back together as they were when I took them apart. However, once the new line was in place the throttle linkage was rubbing it. It was just enough to make a mark on the line... pictures of me in the middle of nowhere with a split fuel line spilling gas everywhere flashed through my mind... so I ended up routing both lines through the backing plate.

Hey Brian,
Where did you just happen to go out and purchase the correct fuel line so easily.
It is just about impossible to find it in my area. The reinforced fuel line commonly available (1/4") is a little too large on the OD to comfortably fit through the mounting plate. The 3/16" size though it is considerably smaller than 5 mm can be persuaded to work but it is extremely difficult to remove from the fittings.
So where did you find this so easily and what fuel line did you use?
Thanks

I went to Seattle Cycle on Aurora -> http://seattlecycle.com/merchanthome.html

I measured the line that I had and found that it was 1/4" ID, went to the shop and told them I needed fuel line. It's gray in color, but I forgot the brand name that is printed on it. The bike is elsewhere so unfortunately I can't pop right out to the garage to check. I'll probably work on it tomorrow so I'll reply back with the brand name. I looked for it on the website but couldn't find it.

The brand name printed on the line was Motion Pro TM. They are gray in color and rather soft. I don't know if they are reinforced. It doesn't say anything else ... I guess that is just the brand that the shop had when I asked for it.

Thanks,
Brian
