looking for wiring harness covering options.
« on: October 05, 2009, 09:01:32 AM »
i am in the middle of making my harneww for the project bike and was wondering what you guys use to cover the wires. i thought of using cloth tape, wire loom, spiral loom, 3m tape. just wondering what your reviews were using this or that and what worked better. thanks

A lot of people use electrical tape.  That gets gummy over time and I'd personally prefer not to use it now.  I'll be shopping for something myself as I have to re-do my wiring this winter.

Split loom will be too big and not flexible.  I think spiral loom looks like ass.

There are various "self sealing" tapes available ont he market which only stick to themselves.  Thats probably the way to go.

Random Googling turned up this stuff:  http://rjminjectiontech.com/?p=15  which looks promising.

I use that "self amalgamating" tape as it's called, no mess and is tidy.
love their price, cost me $25 for mine

Try expandable braided sheathing, we use it a lot for tucking wiring harnesses in cars and for audio installs.  Good stuff and easy to use.  It takes some practice getting the length right when you cut it, so buy extra.  its cheap though so no worries :)

That and heat shrink ends (or maybe that self-amalgamating tape stuff, never used it before but sounds awesome) would do the trick.

+2 on the expandable wire covering. it works like a chinese finger trap, you can buy it buy the roll at mcmaster. they have all sorts of types. you can get it to that is fire resitant and in diffrent colors i belive. i bought a roll but ended up buying a new harness. the ends will tend to come apart but if you do some sort of shrink wrap on them they will stay closed. makes a harness look really clean there was a guy on the forum that did it and it looked very nice.

How's the UV resistance on that braided nylon?

I havent had any get hard from light exposure or start to fade, but most of what I use it for is under the hood or inside the car.  Might be something to consider on a motorcycle though, for sure.

My only gripe with it really is that, being braided, it absorbs liquid. Not such a big deal but again, another thing to consider for a bike install.  Its nylon so the amount of liquid it takes is minimal, but with oil it stays greasy for a bit and cant be simply wiped clean like other looms.

I may very well add some of that over the top of whatever harness wrap I go with for cosmetic reasons and probably it'll help with wear resistance.
