i wanna get started.
« on: September 22, 2009, 06:59:10 AM »
what exactly would it take to get started racing vintage motorcycles. It's in my soul to race, and maybe in my genes. (my dad used to race corvettes in SCCA)

anyway, if i wanted to race a vintage motorcycle circuit, what would it take for me to get a bike race ready, and what would be a good racing club to be a part of?

thanks,
jason

Depends on where you are.

Looks like Georgia.

Take a look at WERA, as they have stuff in your area, I believe, and also look at AHRMA, to get an idea of what kind of class you'd like to run in. Most clubs follow similar guidelines to the AHRMA rules.
No.

The 160 class is very popular in AHMRA, might be a good place to start.. or maybe a 350 2win Honda..

You should head over to Barber Motorsports Park Oct 9th-11th. AHRMA will be over there doing vintage racing and its one of the premier events in the county. You can walk thru the pits and talk to the racers....its all open to the public. And if you have time.....watch the vintage MX......check out the large swap meet.....and check out demo rides as well.

Vintage road racing is very easy to get started in.....and AHRMA has several historic novice production classes which basically allows you to take a stock vintage bike....remove the lights(stock bikes) and get out and race.

Grab a vintage bike....get your road racing license and head out....IT'S A GREAT TIME!! ;D

before reccomending you a 160 i'd ask you how big you are,

If you are over 6' even a 350 will be cramped.

Definetely go to a meeting to see bikes, talk to people and also check what kind of effort is needed to be out there.

Did that before getting started

Nice to see more getting into Vintage racing.

I just started this year with the USCRA. After watching the races and roaming the pits talking with the racers you get hooked.

Lot of guys start on stock bikes with the lights removed. Just get the bike running well and you will be fine. You will need to safety wire everything following the guide line of the group you race with. Another good option is to buy a race read bike. A lot of bike are for sale at less than what it would cost you to build one.

Take a class to get your race license. The class is a lot of fun and gets you on the race track. Buy the best gear you can. Unexpected get offs happen and the gear makes a huge difference.

It is not cheap to start out. Figure 3 to 5k just to get to your first race. After the first race you forget about the cost because you had so much fun. I came in dead last my first two races. It was the most fun I ever had on 2 wheels.
