750 Seat pans/hinges/latches...
« on: December 08, 2005, 05:50:43 PM »

hey guys, well i'm beginning to get angry about not being able to find a seat to fit my K1 - but i have let three nice seats or pans go on E-bay because they were the wrong year - a few years newer - and then, of course, they sell for like 20 bucks... or some such pittance.

somebody must have done this - did Honda change the position of the hinges from year to year? can the later model spring-loaded cylinder lock be unbolted and the older hook latch type be bolted on in it's place? i don't reall want to be welding seat pan hinges if i can avoid it...

i'm wary of buying a bunch of seats or pans only to discover my collection growing to no benefit to my arse...i have seen some bad examples on ebay, but also some pretty nice ones and it's starting to burn me that i can't get one...

I would appreciate any advice. thanks.

I know my F bike and K bike mounts are different but what is the change from the K0 to the others? Also you can unbolt the nodule or unscrew the lock. I disabled the lock and it lines up. Have yet to leave the bike unattended as to worry about battery theft.  I always keep my millions in the tank, so under the seat storage has plenty of space for sandwiches.

heh...hey, man, thanks for the patch.

looks like i'm mostly on my own as far as the seat issue goes. i wish i could look at some other 750 seats, but i don't know that many guys around here taht have them...one in my gang has a chopper and he has a single sitter type seat - i'll figure it all out - i have all winter.

HEY CBJUNKIE,

I will tell you right off the bat that I don't have a definitive answer for you.

I can only tell you that I have a 750 K4 and that the nodules used on the seat hinge are different from what is used on the K0 and the K1 - - - - and that what year Honda made the changeover I don't know.  I just know that the K4 will not work on K0 and K1.

I lost one of the seat retaining pins that fits through the hinge of the seat.  I went to a local salvage yard in Phoenix.  He has thousands of bikes and specializes in Japanese bikes.  I looked at many wrecked 750s.  I found a couple of K4s that still had the seat hinge/pin arrangement and got what I needed.

I saw earlier 750s that had the seat retainer innards, but I could see I would have to make welding arrangements and change things, I didn't want to do that.  I got lucky finally by finding the K4s in good shape.  $1.00 for the hinge pins and the retainers.

Perhaps someone else will help you narrow it down from here,

looks like i just have to refine my search and hunker down...

yeah, it seems nobody takes notice of seat latches. they usually just work out fine. i tried to get some info on custom seat latch setups because the crazy guy that owned my bike lobbed em off. yeah, i'm still trying to figure that one out.

G'Day John,

I replied to your email as well, but anyway, to answer your question, yes, a K2-K6 seat will bolt right up with no mods required, but you'll have to ditch the latch assembly from your K1 and use the K2-K6 lock assembly (both the seat and frame mounted items) as well.

I've got a K2 seat on my K1 at the moment, but I've got a good K1 seat with a new cover ready to go on, as soon as I find a K1 latch assembly, so if you've still got those parts mate, I'd really like to get them offa you and I'd be happy to supply a K2 lock assembly with key in exchange? Let me know mate,

Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Geez I'm shaking uncontrollably just thinking about you coming after me John, ha ha! Here's a spiffy new K1 seat on Ebay:

Don't forget I want your K1 latch assemblies if you go the K2-K6 seat route mate! Cheers, Terry. (wetting myself with fear, ha ha!)  ;D

I know, I'm looking at it too, but I just bought a CB350F-CB750 NOS Derale oil cooler kit in an unopened box for that much money, so I better not buy anything else, that'd be bad......................  :P

t,
that f*er sells two of these a month - i have dreams, fantasies about tracking him, and or his sources, down, beating, waterboarding, letting my cat rape them or otherwise "torturing" him into telling me where the hell he gets these beautiful seats...

i will buy one before next winter...i can feel the money slipping away already.

I might also add as a side note that questions like this in the future can easily be answered by the cafe guru Carpy (<A HREF="http://www.cb750cafe.com>www.cb750cafe.com[/url]).  He's been great about answering questions for me (course, Terry's quite a knowledgable fellow as well).  ;)

Wow

I wished I had seen this before.

I bought a bike last year that is a 1969 frame reg. as a 1970 but has a1974 eng. with 1973 body parts and 1974 wiring.  It came with a new oem seat [also a lot of other oem new parts. I even have the tool set] that was replaced back in the70's to early 80's. Never been ridden. The strap for it has not been put on. It sat on the bike in a high performance shop since the early 80's. I thought I had hit the jack pot because I thought it was a sandcast seat.  It looks as though it is from a later model. Oh well.

Does any one know how to take off a light dusting of over spray? I would hate to ruin this seat by doing something stupid.

Thanks, Ron

G'Day Ron, try a little auto paint "cutting compound", on the tip of your finger, sounds stupid I know, but it's a very light abrasive and I used it on my beautiful F2 (including the seat) when I got overspray (from a car I was painting) all over it. Also excellent for making dull plastic tail light and blinker lenses like new again. Don't use thinners or any other solvent, or you'll cry yourself to sleep like a big girl for the next month, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Carpy's a good bloke, and being an ex-pat Aussie (I'll forgive him for being from England originally) he's an "expert" on most subjects, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. (the "Font")  ;D

Hey Buffy, I'm no K8 expert, but from memory it's the same as my F2 and I think I've got a spare in my garage, I'll look tonight when I get home from work. (protecting the nation) Cheers, Terry. ;D

Port is on your left when you're standing on the bridge (that's the office thingy with the big steering wheel) and you're looking toward the bow. (pointy bit at the front) I only know that because at a military "formal dinner", we have to pass the Port (booze) to the left. Who says alcohol abuse isn't educational? Cheers, Terry.  ;D

What is cutting compound? I have not heard of that before.  I paint acrlic enamel on my bikes and cars.  We use something called reducer. Is that it?

Thanks, Ron
