OK I have to ask... SOme of you are mentioning that you bump the rev limiter... What rev limiter? Do you all have some magical bolt on device? My 750s will rev till they break with no sign of a rev limiter. Are you guys who have mentioned one refering to another motorcycle you own maybe 20 years newer? Or have you actually bolted on electronic engine management with a programable rev limiter?
Fill me in, I am sure my old gals would love for me to quit accidentally pegging the tach.

I will occasionally run first right up to redline and take second up there, too. I don't believe in babying a bike just because of it's age.  There is the rare occasion where I miss a shift and send the motor zooming deep into the red, but that is just for a second and doesn't really hurt the motor since there is no load on it.

My 650 likes to stay above 4000 rpm, and he 750 seems to be comfortable at a bit less than that.

I did take my former cbr600 up to redline once, IIRC that was 65mph or so. 13k rpm is absolutely screaming.
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

I probably hit redline on my 550 daily. (this one goes up to 11...) Over 4k for sure, I only go lower when I'm really feeling like a sunday driver or coming to a stop. Otherwise, I'm with twotired, if the redline is at 10k then dammit, everything up to there is fine. I've slid up to probably 12k before, not intentionally, by that point you're way out of the powerband.

I refuse to drive the bike at lower RPMs than that, if the power band doesn't start until 4K+ I'm sure as hell not going to be 'idling' around for all intents and purposes. Max torque at 8,500 RPM. If I'm in traffic I'm over 6K so I'm not caught with my pants down when some jerk wants to cut me off.

Follow-up...

So following some advice from this thread I have been experimenting with rpms...changing gear later at higher rpms...no where near redline but certainly feeling more power from the rebuilt top end....lots of fun  ;D ;D

cheers

Careful DON'T make fun of the bear! He has helped me place in 2 iron butt events on vintage bikes!

My daughter gave him to me when she was 4 for good luck, he gets stuck to every bike.

Gonna stick my neck out a bit here and suggest that high revving an engine might be better done under load than not. I think the lower end might be more prone to fly apart if not under load.
As for conservative driving at lower RPM's, I'd say it's not lugging the engine if it's turning more slowly but not under much of a load and the less times the engine turns (if not unduly loaded), the less it wears out. After all, when you're traveling along at 65mph in top gear on level ground, You'd be turning, what, 3500rpm? Anyone suggesting riding all day at 65mph in third gearunder these circumstances?

their has been many many of times where I have tached mine out in the back roads.   and since I ride with my brother in law and some buddies who ride new bikes that have more cc's and power.   I have to try and keep up in the corners and straights.     but if I'm around town nothing about 6k.
Keep it shinny side up.

+1 about not revving without a load. 3500 seems very low at 65 Mph, I find it more like 4500 and 5000 at 70. I have no idea who would think running in third gear. I do wind it out in 3rd to getting onto the highway but never anywhere near the redline. Then I just shift into 5th and cruise. I am not a beliver in over reving motors.

Agreed. I do have a nice 530 sprocket/chain conversion on the way that should help bring the revs down at highway speeds.
