Chain binding? Clicking?
« on: September 29, 2009, 06:41:44 PM »
The chain on my 350f is making a weird binding/clicking sound. It made it when backing up at first, now it makes it going foward after I adjusted the slack. It sounds like it is coming from the rear sprocket area. the rear tire will not spin evenly, when it clicks it slows it down. The rear sprocket is brand new, as is the front. I do have a CB450 rim on the back with a larger tire than stock, but have run this setup for about 1500 miles with no issue.

Rusty or stuck chain links?

Stiff link or two or three. You can try to lube it and free it up, but a good practise is to replace the chain with the sprockets.

If the sprockets are new and the chain is old and there are no binding or stiff links your chain could be stretched out enough for it to not fit in the sprocket teeth evenly.

My money is on a stretched chain.

I agree it sounds like a stretched chain, at the same time, I used to run dirt roads a lot and sometimes you wil get some sand and grit in between the chain and the sprocket grooves that you can't see unless you loosen the chain off and lift it off of the sprocket.

Also check for other things like a bolt on the sprocket backing out and just touching something.  I had this happen on an XS650.  It would click only on acceleration, when the cush drive would flex enough to have the bolt head just barely touch on something back there(I don't recall).  PO had installed new chain and sprockets and installed three of the four rear sprocket bolts correctly.  My mistake for not checking it out more thoroughly...
