New Camera and Colorado trip
« on: September 28, 2009, 08:33:53 PM »
So last week I picked up a new camera.  Got a GR Digital II, I've wanted one for quite a while and with a school field trip to Colorado coming up I bit the bullet and ordered one.  All I can say is that I could not be happier with a camera.  Its so much fun to shoot with....   Thats pretty much all I've got, except for some shameless photo posting from the trip.

Saw this along the street in Boulder, Had to get a photo

Thanks.  I probably should have... But I was so stressed out with trying to get all my projects finished up and dealing with the whole bike getting knocked over bs that I didn't even think about it.

Its a Ricoh GR Digital II.  I suppose it would fall into the range of a professional compact.  I didn't want to go DSLR they are just way to big for me, I'd never use it.

Hey steady on, I think I actually saw a picture of a motorcycle in there somewhere! ;D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Nice shots. Question: were the B&W shots created in a post-process, or does this cam have a setting for taking and displaying shots in B&W only? I'm a B&W fan in 35mm and now a 4x5, would love to find some little digital cam I could use for previewing a shot before committing the view cam. Use to do this with a Polaroid back, but that's, well not much of an option anymore.

Bob,  The none of the shots have any sort of post processing. I have the camera set up so that I can quickly switch between color modes within any other mode.  Its about 2 clicks worth of navigation and I can be in any image mode.

The waterfall shot was actually a full second.  It was shot with a 720nm IR filter, hence the white trees and gray sky.  With this filter slow shutter speeds are needed even during the day.

The color on the second (train platform) shot seems to be more intense.  Is that one done on a standard setting, or are the colors just that way?

Good to know on the camera's capabilities. I'll have to check it out further. I really like moving water shots myself. ISO 100, f32 and a second or more are not unusual, but well worth the setup.

To be honest I don't remember what my set up was on the train platform shot.  I think it was just the standard setting.  I too really like the moving water shots,  here are a few more of the same area.

Number 2 and 3 look like IR, or simulated IR, are they?

All 4 are IR I'm using a Hoya R72 equivalent filter. I believe it blocks around 720 and below?

Cool! I like IR shots also. Seems to be a very versatile digicam.

Thanks, I'm just starting to get into IR.  This is the first camera I have owned with the ability to accept filters.  Its a lot of fun.  I really do love the versatility, and portability of the camera.

Ever try film? I've shot 35mm for more years than I care to think about, got into digital and have a decent Nikon kit, but recently took up large format with a view camera, still have my training wheels on though.  ;) Not the most portable outfit, but fun. They can take some pretty stunning shots with incredible detail. The stream shot is from a recent vacation and the other pic is what the 4x5 kit looks like. I can usually con my wife into carrying the tripod and film holders.  ;D

I haven't done much with film either.  My mom has a nice film SLR but I have never really messed around with that.  Large format would be pretty awesome.  It does look a little cumbersome.... but the results I'm sure are amazing.  That photo you posted is really awesome. So crisp and clear.

Nice job. I really liked the building shots. You gotta stick your bike in a few of these. :)
