Hey Don, who's making the repop air boxes ?
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

David silver spares is where I got mine. I hear the Yamiya ones are a little closer to original but cost a bit more. I bought an early ribbed one to rob the hardware from. The ones with the winghead bolts underneath can donate hardware.

No pics for a while, the honda sidecovers are at paint, they missed the color the first time. The base color was wrong, I thought that was easy, silver. He didn't even call me, I stopped by for something else and saw them.
The rolled rim was lost for a while at the chrome shop so I just brought it home naked. A professional is brazing up the tire iron gouges then they will run it through. The wheel bearings are done and I still need a fork gaiter. I'm undecided about buying new ones.

Don,  have you used the painter before?  A mistake I can understand buy not calling when the job is done I cannot fathom, unless he knew he screwed up.  Are the gouges from times past?   Photos please.   Regards....Larry

The painter is gettting a chance to prove himself before I hire him on a bigger job, although this one is very important to me. He comes recommended and he knows I'm the president of the local street rod club so a good job can mean work for him too.
I had just stopped by to sell him a spot on our Tee shirts and he was embarrassed that I saw the paint, he knew it turned out wrong.
The rolled rim was on the PO's drag bike and they roughed up the finish a bit while swapping slicks. The scratches went past the chrome in a couple spots, we tig brazed them in.

Well the Honda sidecover paint is beautiful but he missed the fade, it looks new.

The original airbox is in better condition than I thought, I may go ahead and leave it on the sandcast and use the repro on my K0. Then I can paint another set of sidecovers and try again to match the paint. For $100 on the 4 pieces he did a nice job, just not exactly what I wanted.

I got the new wheel bearings done and made a tool to keep the retainer nice.

Maybe if I put the sidecovers in a tanning bed for a week, or hang them outside in the sun / snow.

Finally, the rim came back from the chrome shop, it looks awesome. Good but not too good. The DID logo is clear to see as new.
I laced it up on the kitchen table, chucked an old swingarm in the vise and trued it using some aluminum strips and c clamps for gauges.
I was feeling spunky so I hand mounted the tire  and popped it back on the bike. The old breezer tire tool works better since I got smarter. The camera is still in the shop, film at 11.
Now I can put the new front tire back on, I didn't like having the bike on just the center stand and a floor jack so I left a loaner tire on the front while waiting for the rear to get done. A well meaning helper ripped a fork gaiter while helping load it at the auction so I have that to replace too.

I trued the rim and munted the tire. I'll balance it on the bike when I replace the chain.

Well, I rolled it under the hoist for a safety strap while I had it on the center stand, jack  and back tire. I got the torn fork gaiter swapped and the original front wheel back on with the new tires. The new rear tube leaked down so I either pinched the tube or didn't tighten the valve core enough. The carbs had gas on the drain screws so I replaced the gaskets, It started and ran, after dinner I'm going for a dose of no alcohol gas. Maybe a few pictures and a ride tomorrow.
I had placed the incorrect I'm sure, phillips airbox screws in a points cover to keep track of them. I went to install it, no screws. I looked everywhere and no screws. I decided to check the parts from the drag bike since it has so many new bolts and BOOM, there were two 8 head bolts the correct size. There's a good chance the  PO took them off the sandcast and later used them on the dragbike.
Sometimes it's eerie how the proper parts appear in house.  I'm glad I bought the dragbike for sure.

I have another set of sidecovers coming for a try at matching the paint. It appears my diecast will be red too. lol. Or maybe I can pick off a nice set of old ones somewhere with a little fade in them.

Well, I got in too big a hurry, rode it and plugged the carbs. Apparently I didn't get the tank as clean as I thought. #1 exhaust is hot 2,3,4, are warm. I'm guessing slow jets foooooey. I didn't want filters since I've had problems with them but I have seen them marked safe for ethanol use. Maybe that will help.

I gave it a set of fresh plugs and cleaned the slow jets, there was some dirt and slime in the bowls, must have been in the petcock or fuel line. It runs way better, still not perfect. Now that it runs OK I can do the 3K tune-up. I'm thinking it has original points with 8800 miles. I have 2 miles on it now. Woo hoo!  Pictures at 11.

The sandcast spent some quality time with the supersport today. The sandy runs good, now if yamiya would get a batch of nono's when I have the $$.

Tomorrow I'll roll the 70 diecast out for a group picture. Someday soon I'll decide which one to sell. Maybe.
I've replaced the wheel bearings, tires, spark plugs and re-installed the original handlebars and rear rim. The rim needed rechroming and new spokes and the side covers are honda, 1 nos and 1 used. Paint fresh but doesn't match the fade on the rest of the bike. The current airbox is a repo but I have the original, slightly gas stained and cracked. I cleaned the caliper the master cylinder is fine so far.

The original 8 head air filter housing bolts and one rear axle holder bolts were found on the PO's drag bike. I still need a proper rear chain case bolt, this one isn't correct. I did a test run of dechroming K0 engine parts. The results were good so maybe at some point I'll remove the added chrome. The PO chromed the original parts, rather than exchanging them thank goodness. The chrome headed bolts have the 8 on them.
That's not much for a bike made in 69 and living in the rust belt. So far I can't see a good enough reason to restore it, it's just too cool like it is. The rocker cover is chrome and I believe the PO told me the pucks have been replaced, so the engine has been out at least once, maybe twice.

Edit, I did sell the F to finance the 4-4 exhaust LOL. Good call Larry.

My long range plan is paint the diecast's wrinkle tank, ears and headlight to match these sidecovers and airbox. That makes the diecast red instead of the blue green I had wanted but gives me another chance to match the sidecover paint.
The next try on sidecovers will probably be a different body shop. The guys there painted my dragster at a previous business, it still needs nibbed and rubbed out.

I did find the punch marks for the factory campaigns, they punched the rear hub rather than the engine case. 4 punch marks, I assume that's chain, battery vent, replace the 15T front sprocket, carb caps?

I rode her a few miles today. Filled up with 92 octane straight gas and went by the body shop to see about getting the sidecovers painted so they match.

I bought a nice acorn nut mirror off Ebay for $20. It was on a cb500T, looks exactly like the one on the sandcast. Same side so I flipped the mirror around, they are ambidextrous. In 73 I shortened a set of them. dang.

I read that some real early bikes came with one mirror. hmmm.

EDIT, those mirrors aren't the same as sandcast.
